Chess is a fantastic and wonderfully complex game with benefits that reach far beyond the immediate enjoyment of competitive play. It's a game that helps to develop memory, reasoning and critical thinking. Chess promotes creativity and self-confidence. It encourages the imagination as well as that kind of strategic planning that's helpful in everyday life whether it be in school or work. With children in particular, chess can be a lot of fun while creating noticeable improvements in academic performance and behavioral self-control.
In the past I've taught the game of chess to children as young as 3 and to adults as old as 70. I've worked professionally for more than twenty years with children and adults who are also challenged with autism spectrum disorders and psychiatric illnesses and I've often incorporated chess into that same work. I've also created and run a children's chess club for a library on the south shore and another for a community center just outside of Boston. I'm an unusually patient and supportive person and really enjoy teaching.
My lessons are tailored to your own individual circumstances and needs. These lessons are available for general beginner and intermediate players of all ages in your own home or any neutral location at a very affordable price. I am a US Chess Federation tournament player with a current rating of about 1750. If you're not familiar with the USCF ratings system this basically means that I'm an above average tournament player and therefore would not be helpful to tournament players in my same ratings range or higher.
I live in Quincy but can travel a reasonable distance to meet you. I have students from Roslindale to Falmouth with ages from 4 to 39. Daytime, weekend and after-school hours are available.
My fees range from $20/hour to $40/hour based again on individual circumstances and needs. Discounts available for multiple hour lessons and multiple students.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
