Critically acclaimed mixed-voice chamber choir St. Charles Singers open their season with “North American Mosaic,” comprising songs of different eras and cultural perspectives from the U.S. and Canada.&nbsp; “The program paints a wide-ranging historical and cultural panorama through songs dating from early America to the present day,” says founder and music director Jeffrey Hunt.
He describes it as “a tapestry of American experience, with a respectful nod to Canada.”
“Gimikwenden Ina” (Do You Remember?) is from Canadian composer Corey Payette’s musical “Children of God,” about indigenous Oji-Cree children forced into boarding schools to erase their native culture and family connections. Payette is a member of the Mattagami First Nation. The St. Charles Singers will perform Elliot Vaughan’s arrangement for four-part choir with piano and drum.
It’s one of eight works on the program that the St. Charles Singers will be performing for the first time.
Another is “The Bird,” by early America’s William Billings, considered the country’s first professional choral composer. Written in 1790 and based on Psalm 11, the score includes Billings’ characteristic fugues, melisma, and tone painting.
New England’s pioneering American modernist composer Charles Ives wrote “The Circus Band” in 1894 while still a student a Yale University. It’s a humorous, nostalgic take on a young boy’s excitement at the chaos and exuberance of a passing circus parade.
William Dawson’s rhythmic arrangement of “Ain’-a That Good News” is a lively 1937 setting of a timeless, joyful African American spiritual.
Florence Price wrote both the music and text for “Resignation,” a quiet, poetic reflection on the physical and emotional trauma of slavery. 
Aaron Copland’s “Old American Songs,” Book 1, published in 1950, were famously adapted for mixed-voice choir by Copland’s friend and colleague, composer Irving Fine. The songs are 19th-century folk, minstrel, and religious tunes Copland sourced from historic collections.
Composer, arranger, and singer Ysaye M. Barnwell is a former member of the African American female a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey In The Rock. In “We Are,” she extols the transcendent value of every human life and the interconnectedness of all people. 
Concertgoers will hear Arnold Sevier’s celebrated 1996 arrangement of Thomas Dorsey’s 1930s gospel standard “Precious Lord.” 
Brandon Williams’ stirring, 2022 a cappella arrangement of Daniel Iverson’s hymn “Spirit of the Living God” includes double soprano and bass parts for lush six-part harmonies. 
Award-winning composer and choirmaster Craig Hella Johnson of Austin, Texas, says “Reaching” is about “cultural and spiritual separation and displacement as well as a soulful yearning to ‘come home’ to one another.” 
Kile Smith’s “Northland,” from 2023, includes musical settings of four poems about the immigrant experience by Jamaica-born Harlem Renaissance writer Claude McKay: “The Tropics in New York,” “America,” “On Broadway,” and “To One Coming North.”

Bach in the City’s season opens with “Fantasticus: Bach and Before,” a chamber concert devoted to works composed in the free-wheeling, improvisational “Stylus Fantasticus” Baroque style that predated J. S. Bach. The program includes music by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, Dietrich Buxtehude, Johann Rosenmüller, Johann Christoph Bach, Johann Pachelbel, and J. S. Bach himself, the “youngest” composer in the group.
Bach in the City’s co-music director Jason Moy has mapped out a “Fantasticus” voyage.
In a program note, Moy cites 17th-century music theorist Athanasius Kircher’s description of Stylus Fantasticus as “the most free and unrestrained method of composing … instituted to display genius and to teach the hidden design of harmony and the ingenious composition of harmonic phrases and fugues.”
Moy invites listeners to savor this middle-Baroque period style “through the imaginative and virtuosic works” of Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, Dietrich Buxtehude, Johann Rosenmüller, Johann Christoph Bach, Johann Pachelbel, and Johann Sebastian Bach.
A highlight will be a rare performance of Pachelbel’s ubiquitous, widely beloved Canon in D Major in its original version for just three violins and continuo (Baroque rhythm section), along with Pachelbel’s oft-neglected Gigue in D Major, a playful, energetic dance piece with which the Canon was originally paired by the composer.
“Some have referred to the Gigue as the ‘B-side’ of the pairing,” Moy says. “But the B-side of a recording sometimes turns out to be the hit song.”
Biber wrote some of the most notoriously difficult, complex violin music of the Baroque era. The concert includes Biber’s Sonata violino solo representativa and Sonata à 6 in C Major, in which the trumpet also gets opportunities to shine.
Violin and viola da gamba are prominent in Buxtehude’s austere, elegant Sonata in A Minor, BuxWV 272, which illustrates the composer’s masterful use of “basso ostinato,” a repeating bass line.
Rosenmüller’s Sonata Decima à 5 in F Major blends strict German Baroque counterpoint with the lyrical, theatrical virtuosity of the Italian Renaissance operas the composer heard during his sojourn in Venice.
Johann Christoph Bach’s masterwork, his deeply moving Lament “Ach, dass ich Wassers gnug hätte” (Oh, if only I had enough tears) for alto soloist, is a profound expression of repentance. He was the older cousin of J. S. Bach, who referred to him as “the profound composer.”
The program, directed by Moy, closes with J. S. Bach’s
uplifting sacred cantata “Jauchzet Gott in Allen Landen” (Exult in God in all lands), BWV 51, featuring soprano and trumpet solos.
Soloists are soprano Hannah De Priest, countertenor Ryan Belongie, violinist Amelia Sie, and trumpeter Ryan Berndt.This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council.

The work includes the resplendent “Wedding March,” one of the most famous pieces of classical music, traditionally heard at the conclusion of the ceremony as the newlywed couple walks out in joyous celebration.
Hall, who was born in Norwich, England, and retains his “plummy” British accent, will narrate excerpts from the play, set in an enchanted forest, as well as conduct Mendelssohn’s witty and colorful, atmospheric score conjuring bird songs, buzzing insects, rustling leaves, and rippling creeks.
Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for Four Winds in E-flat major, K. 297b, is a charming and melodious three-movement orchestral work. The soloists are four of Camerata Chicago’s principal players: Grace Hong, oboe; Elizandro Garcia Montoya, clarinet; Vincent Karamanov, bassoon; and Lee Shirer, horn.

“We are thrilled to feature our superb principal wind players for the first time with the programming of this marvelous concerto,” Hall says.“Audiences who are used to hearing the Mendelssohn and Mozart played by a symphony orchestra can savor these more intimately scaled performances for the musical detail they reveal,” Hall says.
“Both are examples of works that were originally written for orchestras the size of Camerata Chicago,” he says, “as were many other important works in the classical repertoire we feature.”
Camerata Chicago, Hall says, “is about chamber-music intimacy on a larger stage.”
Hall describes Payne’s ““Fantasy on English Melodies” as “beautifully cast in the mold of Ralph Vaughan Williams, who turned English folk tunes into wonderful, spiritually uplifting compositions.”

Heralding the Christmas season, Camerata Chicago and Camerata Chicago Chorus will feature Part I of George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah,” HWV 56 — traditionally known as the Christmas section — followed by the jubilant “Hallelujah” chorus from Part II, sung first by the chorus and repeated as an audience sing-along.
The concert, led by founder and music director Drostan Hall, opens with Handel’s celebratory “Zadok the Priest,” HWV 258, for orchestra and chorus, an anthem written for the coronation of England’s King George II. The text is derived from the biblical account of the anointing of King Solomon by Zadok and the public’s rejoicing.
The piece opens with a long suspenseful build-up leading to the chorus’s glorious entry.
Hall sees a spiritual connection between these works. “’Zadok’ is about the anointment of an earthly king, recognized by God and the Church,” he says. “‘Messiah’ is about the arrival of the heavenly king.”
Soloists are soprano Emily Richter, mezzo-soprano Camille Robles, tenor Daniel Luis Espinal, and bass-baritone Laureano Quant.

Bach in the City rings in the New Year with three of the six distinct feast-day cantatas that constitute Johann Sebastian Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, BWV 248. The period-instrument ensemble will perform Parts I, V and VI, celebrating Christmas Day, the Sunday after New Year’s, and Epiphany.

Jason Moy, Bach in the City's co-music director, says, “From festive trumpets and resounding timpani heralding the birth of the Christ child to moving and contemplative chorales for chorus, Bach’s sacred masterpiece depicts the familiar Christmas story in dramatic fashion.” 
Part 1 is celebratory and regal, with the choir exclaiming, “Jauchzet, frohlocket!” (Shout for joy!). Part V, with lush, expressive melodies, depicts the long journey of the three Wise Men. The triumphant and majestic Part VI represents The Adoration of the Magi, ending with a thrilling finale with trumpet melodies woven over the top of a powerful final chorale.
Soloists are Hannah De Priest, soprano; Ryan Belongie, countertenor; Gene Stenger, tenor; and Paul Max Tipton, bass.
Guest concertmaster is violinist Adriane Post, leader of the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra and founding member of the ACRONYM Ensemble and Diderot String Quartet.

Our Voices, Our Minds: BIPOC Youth Navigating Discrimination in Education
ALMAS and North Central College invite students, families, educators, and community leaders to an evening of dialogue, reflection, and empowerment focused on the lived experiences of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) youth navigating discrimination in educational spaces. The event features an interactive panel discussion with BIPOC youth — including first-generation high school and college students — sharing personal stories alongside mental health professionals offering clinical insight. A community resource fair runs alongside the panel, connecting attendees with local youth-serving and mental health organizations, plus entertainment, interactive activities, and complimentary food.
Free and open to the public. Spanish interpretation provided.
