As part of its Spring 2026 programming, the Jamaica Center for Arts &amp; Learning (JCAL) presents Riddim Section 2026 featuring GRAMMY-nominated percussionist Chembo Corniel, a leading force in Afro-Cuban jazz whose work bridges tradition and innovation. The series spotlights world-class artists celebrating musical traditions drawn from across Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, and the Americas.
Known for his dynamic, rhythm-driven sound and commanding presence, Corniel has performed with legends including Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, and Willie Colón. Leading his ensemble Chembo &amp; Grupo Chaworó, he delivers a vibrant and immersive live performance blending bebop, swing, and Afro-Caribbean traditions—offering audiences a powerful celebration of rhythm, history, and cultural connection.
After kicking off opening in February with Edmar Castañeda, additional dates for Riddim Section feature Andre White and Mark Adams &amp; The Ubiquity Band.

The Billie Holiday Theatre, in partnership with Bed-Stuy Art House, presents Happy Birthday Malcolm &amp; Lorraine!: A Return to Foundation Through Theater Arts + Live Music, a one-night-only, multidisciplinary celebration honoring the shared birthday and enduring legacies of Malcolm X and Lorraine Hansberry. Two Performances.
Featuring original works by Shaun Neblett, Nambi E. Kelley, and Felicia Cade, with music direction by Cinque Kemp, the evening brings together theater, live music, and contemporary performance to engage their legacies as living frameworks - exploring how their ideas around self-determination, resistance, and liberation continue to shape artistic expression today.

The Jamaica Center for Arts &amp; Learning (JCAL) presents the 10th Annual Queens International Children’s Festival, a free, outdoor celebration of global culture, creativity, and shared experiences for families across New York City. Marking a decade of impact in Southeast Queens, this beloved annual event brings together music and dance traditions from around the world alongside hands-on arts activities designed for children of all ages.
Throughout the day, families can enjoy a dynamic lineup of live performances featuring DJ Barry Blends as emcee, Eric Q’s Family Magic Show, Pan Evolution Steel Orchestra, and La Troupe Zetwal. Interactive experiences include creative workshops in Art Zone led by JCAL Teaching Artists, face painting, caricature portraits, the “Super YOU!” comic strip and costume-making station, and cultural art-making activities exploring identity and global traditions. The festival’s Game Zone offers additional fun with lawn and tabletop games, mini-golf, a photo booth, and classic treats like popcorn and cotton candy.

JCAL Celebrates  its 10th Annual Queens International Children’s Festival 

The Billie Holiday Theatre, one of the nation’s leading arts and culture institutions, in partnership with The Brooklyn Mavens, an influential platform spotlighting the borough’s vibrant creative community, proudly announces the return of Brooklyn Unplugged. Marking the third collaboration between The Billie and The Brooklyn Mavens, this dynamic, one-night-only showcase highlights the best emerging talent from across New York City. 
Following the success of last year’s electrifying event, Brooklyn Unplugged returns to The Billie’s legendary stage, offering a powerful platform for vocalists, poets, musicians (no bands), dancers, and multidisciplinary performers to share their artistry before a live audience. The evening will culminate in a live audience vote, with the winning act receiving a $500 grand prize and a guaranteed performance slot in The Billie’s Skylight Open, its signature monthly music and spoken word series. Additional prizes will also be awarded.

We couldn't be more grateful to all the volunteers over the years who have helped beautify the 23-acre Jay Estate (wearing every color T-shirt from yellow to purple)!! From uncovering hidden flagstone paths, to raking leaves and planting annuals. We've participated in every I Love My Parks Day with Parks &amp; Trails NY and NY State Parks since 2012! Partner groups have included the Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Mount Vernon Youth Bureau, Yale Alumni, Con Edison, Rye Neck School, Mamaroneck School, Stanford Alumni, the Rye Garden Club, Rye Sustainability Committee and many more.&nbsp;

Event starts at 9am and finishes at 12pm but you can help out for just an hour or two - whatever works for your schedule.

Join Indigo Goodson-Fields on a bird outing through the Jay Estate's newly designated New York State Birding Trail! Binoculars are not needed but if you have a pair, bring them (there will be a limited amount of shared binoculars available). All ages and experience levels are welcome. 
Indigo Goodson-Fields is a writer, poet, and birder based in Brooklyn. Her forthcoming book, entitled Essential Birding is an anthology about the importance of birding in the lives of Black birders across the U.S. and will be published by OR Books in fall 2026.
