About the Book
A treasure trove of anecdotes that illuminate the lives, humor, and wisdom of Eastern European Jewish communities from the 18th and 19th centuries. ​ A bestseller nearly a century ago in its original Yiddish and now brought to renewed life in translation by Jonathan Boyarin and Jonah Sampson Boyarin, these stories capture the essence of a world where tradition and ingenuity intertwined. From rabbis and scholars to everyday figures, the tales are alternately heartwarming, sharp, and deeply human, preserving the oral folklore of a vibrant culture at risk of being forgotten. This collection invites readers to laugh, reflect, and connect with the enduring spirit of Yiddishland’s Jews.
About the Authors
JONATHAN BOYARIN is a veteran ethnographer of Ashkenazi Jewish communities and translator of Yiddish works about those communities. His books about the Jews of the Lower East Side include Mornings at the Stanton Street Shul and Yeshiva Days: Learning on the Lower East Side.
JONAH BOYARIN is a writer, educator, and Yiddish translator. His solo work, both original and translation, has been published in Jewish Currents, The Forward, In Geveb, Ayin, and elsewhere. In 2015, he co-founded the first-ever Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion program at a Jewish day school, and then went on to serve as the Jewish Communities Liaison for the New York City Commission on Human Rights. He is currently pursuing a PhD in religious studies at Columbia University. Jonah always roots for the underdog, except when it comes to his beloved Yankees.

Book Launch for As the Story Goes: Funny, Strange, and Serious Stories of Yiddishland’s Jews 

City Lore is pleased to host the book launch for Hysterical Coney Island by visual artists Richard Eagan and Philomena Moreno on Sunday, June 7th, 3pm – 5pm. City Lore is located at 56 East First Street, Manhattan. Admission is FREE.
About Hysterical Coney Island
Hysterical Coney Island is a unique, personal story of how two artists and their colleagues made an impact on the cultural life of New York City, and helped pull America’s great historic amusement beach out of a nosedive. It is a chronicle of a “handmade” time in the worlds of art and amusement that will never be seen again.
As the 1970s came to an end, Coney Island was at its worst—the old timers were retiring or dying, and the beloved Pavilion of Fun at Steeplechase Park had been torn down by speculator Fred Trump in his race against the Landmarks Commission.
The authors, both native Brooklyn visual artists, formed the Coney Island Hysterical Society in 1981 as a response to this community in crisis. In concert with Dick Zigun’s Coney Island USA, the Hysterical Society struck a spark that would grow to become what historian Charles Denson calls “The Artists’ Renaissance” in Coney Island. 
Eagan and Moreno summed up their motivation this way, "Do we want to simply retreat to our studios and make art, or do we want to jump in and try to do something about this?”
With contributions from playwright Harvey Fierstein, historian Richard Snow, and critic/curators Ann Aptaker and Aaron Beebe, Hysterical Coney Island is a personal account of the authors’ years working in both Coney Island and in the studio-work that took on greater depth and resonance for having been seasoned in the daily life of Coney Island itself.

We

Group® March 2026 Tuesday Night Speaker Series presenters.
The
 presentation, which is open to justice-impacted people, family, 
friends, professionals, clients, colleagues and anyone interested, will 
take place via Zoom on June 2, 2026 at 7 PM ET (4 PM PT).
P.G.
 Sittenfeld’s journey took him from Princeton to politics to prison to 
Supreme Court petitioner. Today, he is a writer, whose recent work has 
appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Free Press, 
Esquire, and America Magazine. He regularly gives talks at top U.S. law 
schools as well as at law firms, prisons, business clubs, and trade 
associations.
Sittenfeld
 is a graduate of Princeton University and Oxford University in England,
 where he was a Marshall Scholar. He served for a decade on Cincinnati’s
 City Council and was expected to become the city’s next mayor, when he 
was prosecuted on public corruption charges in 2020, stemming from an 
FBI sting operation later likened in court to a “prosecutorial Truman 
Show.”
The
 law firm Jones Day took on Sittenfeld’s case pro bono, calling it “the 
most extreme prosecution based on lawful campaign donations in U.S. 
history,” and amici weighing in with the court in support of 
Sittenfeld’s innocence have included top White House, DOJ, and Judicial 
officials spanning the past four decades.
For
 4.5 months in 2024, Sittenfeld was Federal Inmate 18085–509 at FCI 
Ashland in Kentucky, before an appeals court took the very rare step of 
ordering his early release pending appeal. In 2025, Sittenfeld received a
 full and unconditional Presidential pardon, after which he became the 
first person to ever petition the U.S. Supreme Court after receiving a 
pardon, where his appeal remains pending.
Sittenfeld lives in Cincinnati, with his wife, Sarah, an oncologist, and their three young sons.

Two Theaters. 20+ Films. One Day Experience.
The 2nd Annual Boricua Film Festival returns on Saturday, June 6, 2026 at 1:00 PM at the Williams Center in Rutherford, NJ. Come spend the day with Puerto Rican films, live performance, poetry, music, conversation, and community in one in-person festival experience.
Presented by the Boricua Community Building Center in collaboration with ADoCPR’s Cinema on the Road, this year’s festival brings 15 short and medium-length films across two theaters.
This year we are proud to feature Cortaditos, an award winning six-film Puerto Rican short film block presented through our new collaboration with the Puerto Rico European Film Festival and Alliance Française de Puerto Rico.
Audiences will experience films including Golpe de Agua, Mulata, Chimenea de muerte, De tribus y máscaras, El Arresto, El Pueblo de Coral, and A Tale of Two Cities: Reclaiming Niagara Falls and Salinas.
The Cortaditos six film selection includes award winning short films Ketchup, PUM!, Lo Que Quedó, Engreída, Recao, and Moriviví.
The day includes a film panel Q&amp;A and audience discussion with filmmakers, authors, educators, activists, and community leaders whose work connects directly to the stories on screen. Featured guest speakers include Inés Mongil, Samantha J. Garcia-Sherpa, Andre Lee Muñiz, Gualterio Alomar, and Daliana Alvarado.
Live performances includes a free Bomba y Plena workshop and live performance by Cimarrones de Nueva Jersey, Folkloric Salsa by Spirit in Motion 3.0, poetry by Nelly Nel and Johnathan Garcia, and additional community artists. The films open the door, and the performances and conversations carry the experience beyond the screen.
The festival also welcomes nonprofit partners El Comedor del Kennedy and MiPatriaPR, who will join us in sharing community resources, cultural work, and ways to stay connected to Puerto Rico and the diaspora.
Community passes includes access to screenings, panels, Q&amp;As, performances, and full-day festival access.
