Artist Umi Hsu will lead a scallion sourdough bread workshop that dives into the sound, taste, smell, and the transformative potential of yeast. With impromptu engagement with PoCo resident artist Minh Phan, Hsu will facilitate a living thought fermentation on catalytic impulse and mycelial time in relation to social movements. We will make revolutionary bread, listen to Hsu’s audio documentary <a href="https://discojournal.com/home/how-to-grow-a-movement" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">How To Grow A Movement</a>, and tune into the yeast dance mixes from Community Assembly, Hsu’s sound installation included in the Wild Wonderful Sporadic Kin exhibit at One Gallery.
Inspired by the science and sound of the sugar fungus, this micro-ethnographic sound work explores the concept of Critical Yeast, a term coined by peacebuilding practitioner and scholar John Paul Lederach. As an alternative to critical mass, Critical Yeast refers to the catalytic coming together of a group of individuals who are not like-minded or like-situated, and can transform in a context of conflict.

LET'S GROW A MOVEMENT: A Sound-Inspired Breadmaking Workshop

Artist Xelestial Moreno-Luz will lead a screening of No Estás Sola, followed by a conversation with Natalia Lane, the subject of the documentary. Presented in Spanish with English translation.
On January 16, 2022, Mexican sex worker and trans activist Natalia Lane survived an attempted transfeminicide. Three years later, after the Mexican judicial system failed to hold her attacker accountable, Lane organized an action in Mexico City demanding justice on her own terms. No Estás Sola documents this act of resistance, tracing the transformation of grief and rage into collective care, accountability, and catharsis.
Through film and conversation, Moreno-Luz and Lane will reflect on the power of storytelling as a tool for survival, political organizing, and community-held memory. Together, they will consider how marginalized communities create their own forms of justice when institutional systems fail to protect them.

El 16 de enero de 2022, Natalia Lane, trabajadora sexual y activista trans mexicana, sobrevivió a un intento de transfeminicidio. Tres años después, tras la falta de respuesta del sistema judicial mexicano para responsabilizar a su agresor, Lane organizó una acción en la Ciudad de México para exigir justicia en sus propios términos. No Estás Sola documenta este acto de resistencia, siguiendo la transformación del dolor y la rabia en cuidado colectivo, responsabilidad y catarsis.
A través del cine y la conversación, Moreno-Luz y Lane reflexionarán sobre el poder de la narración como una herramienta de supervivencia, organización política y memoria comunitaria. Juntas, explorarán cómo las comunidades históricamente marginadas crean sus propias formas de justicia cuando las instituciones no logran protegerlas.

Drawing from de la Torre's studio practice, the workshop explores the intersections of text, memory, and material as forms of personal and collective expression.
Working through clay as a tactile and time-based medium, participants will consider how language can hold histories of migration, identity, and care, transforming everyday gestures into acts of reflection and solidarity.

Artists Badly Licked Bear and Mand Ph. will present&nbsp;Hole Is Where the Heart Is, a conversation and live demonstration exploring experimental weaving, dyeing, and collaborative making through the lenses of queer embodiment, intimacy, and kinship. Together, they will share how their practice draws on ancestral knowledge, trans experience, and material experimentation to imagine new relationships between bodies, craft, and care.
The program culminates in a live demonstration of an experimental blood-based dye process that uses the warmth of the human body as a dye vessel, examining transformation as both a material process and a site of queer worldmaking.
Please note:&nbsp;The demonstration portion of&nbsp;Hole Is Where the Heart Is&nbsp;includes explicit queer sexuality. Attendees will be notified before this portion begins and may leave the program at any time.

Drawing from their approach to photographing Queer Black and Brown communities, Woods will guide participants through techniques for creating portraits that celebrate authenticity, care, and connection.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own digital or film camera and will take part in a series of portrait-making exercises before gathering to share and discuss their images as a group.

New California Disclosure Law Gives Los Angeles Businesses New Leverage Against Merchant Cash Advance Lenders
SB 362, in effect since January 2026, is reshaping how Los Angeles business owners challenge merchant cash advance contracts &mdash; and where those disputes get fought.
LOS ANGELES &mdash; A California law that took effect at the start of 2026 is changing the calculus for Los Angeles business owners buried in merchant cash advance (MCA) debt, giving them disclosure-based defenses that were largely unavailable two years ago.
Senate Bill 362, which took effect January 1, 2026, is the most significant update to California's commercial financing disclosure framework since the original SB 1235. It requires MCA providers operating in Los Angeles to deliver standardized APR disclosures that meet strict formatting rules. When a funder fails to do so, the contract may be voidable &mdash; and the daily ACH withdrawals draining a business account may be legally stoppable.
The California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) enforces these disclosure requirements, and the standards exist so business owners can see the true cost of financing &mdash; APR, finance charge, payment amount, term, and prepayment details &mdash; before signing. Where the disclosures were missing, understated, or inconsistent with how the deal actually performed, those gaps are becoming central to MCA disputes across the LA metro.
Disclosure is only one line of attack. Los Angeles business owners are also challenging the fundamental characterization of the MCA itself. A true merchant cash advance is a purchase of future receivables &mdash; not a loan &mdash; and that distinction matters because loans are subject to California's usury limits. Courts apply a three-factor test, examining whether the contract includes a genuine reconciliation clause that adjusts payments to actual revenue, whether the funder retains recourse if the business fails, and whether the funder bears real risk. Fixed daily payments that never flex with sales are a hallmark of a disguised loan.
There is also a jurisdictional trap unique to out-of-state enforcement. Many MCA agreements route disputes to New York courts, and a New York judgment can be enforced in California &mdash; but only if proper domestication procedures were followed. California courts can refuse to recognize judgments that skip those steps.
For Los Angeles owners, the recurring theme is timing. Reconciliation records, bank statements, and the original disclosure documents all matter, and the strongest defenses take shape before a judgment is entered and accounts are frozen.
