It’s 1864, after the Battle of Gettysburg, the Civil War in the east&nbsp;&nbsp;is basically at a standstill with both Generals Meade and Lee jockeying for battlefield positions – and what is becoming more important – the North is becoming war weary!&nbsp;It is at this point, after his victories at Vicksburg and Chattanooga, that Pres. Abraham Lincoln summons Gen. Grant east to take command. Coming as a continuation of the lectures of Prof. Jennifer Murray of Gen. Meade, the NJCWRT presentations continue with Gen. Grant now in command.
About the Presenter: Dr. Curt Fields&nbsp;is noted for his first-person presentation, in uniform, as the definitive&nbsp;&nbsp;Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, Dr. Fields is a highly sought after speaker on a nationwide basis. He has also been referred to as the&nbsp;official Gen. Grant.&nbsp;Presented in a conversational&nbsp;&nbsp;style, when you listen you almost feel that Gen. Grant is in your living room speaking to you!Dr. Fields has&nbsp;&nbsp;been a teacher of middle school to graduate classes. &nbsp;He is also a former Memphis, TN, police officer and was a member of the Hostage Negotiating team for the police department.&nbsp;He holds a Ph.D. from Michigan State in Educational Administration and Curriculum.&nbsp;He has been a life-long student of the Civil War and when he was made aware of his physical resemblance to General Grant, decided to portray Grant in a first-person persona to effectively use his physical stature and build to "show" people what General Grant looked like. New Jersey has 564 municipalities. In contrast, California has 483. Why does New Jersey have so many independent towns and subsequently so many municipal governments? Join historian and archivist Mickey DiCamillo as he explains why New Jersey has divided itself, divided itself again, and almost always refuses to erase its municipal boundaries. Does this subdivision of the state make New Jersey better or worse off? We will discover that the debate is quintessentially American and as old as Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has been collecting American works since its opening in the 1870s. &nbsp;In 1924, the museum officially opened its American Wing, providing a special focus and celebration of these objects. Today, the American Wing houses some of the museum’s most beloved pieces, such as Leutze’s Washington Crossing the Delaware, Gilbert Stuart’s iconic portrait of George Washington, Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Diana, as well as Louis Comfort Tiffany’s dramatic three-part window, Garden Landscape. This lecture will discuss these pieces and other important works from the collection. &nbsp;
Mallory Mortillaro is an art historian and educator. Highlights of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s American Wing (ON ZOOM)

At nine feet tall, this impressive portrait of the sixteenth president has been praised by those who knew him as more lifelike than any other. Exhibited at the US Capitol, the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, and the Union League Club in New York, among other important places, this portrait eventually found a home in the Hartley Dodge Memorial in Madison, NJ. Mallory will share her first-hand account of researching this painting and the stories she uncovered as she leads the audience through this painting’s fascinating provenance. This portrait is currently on loan to the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. This lecture will be given by Mallory Mortillaro.Mallory&nbsp;is an art historian and educator.&nbsp; She has a decade of teaching experience and has worked on various art research projects for museums and organizations in the New York metropolitan area.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Her discoveries in the art world have garnered her international attention.&nbsp; She studied at Drew University.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Mallory resides in New Jersey with her husband and daughter.

This talk will trace the artistic career of Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828), who produced over 1,000 portraits in his lifetime as he worked in eight cities: Newport, Rhode Island; Edinburgh; London; Dublin; New York; Philadelphia; Washington, D.C.; and Boston. Renowned for the accuracy of his facial likenesses, Stuart painted the most important Americans of his time, including presidents. One of his portraits of George Washington, for instance, is reflected in the current one-dollar bill. A charming conversationalist, to draw out his sitters’ personality (though not every story he told was true), and sometimes irascible, Stuart became the most preeminent art authority in America. Works of art from East Coast institutions will take pride of place in the talk.
This talk will be on Zoom and lead by art historian, Michael Norris.&nbsp;

MADISON, NJ — Film lovers and supporters of independent cinema are invited to a special edition of Show Us Your Shorts on Tuesday, May 27 at 7:00 PM, featuring an exciting exclusive first look at the upcoming Mortenveld Productions short film, Back Up.
Held as part of the monthly Show Us Your Shorts showcase, this month’s event will include a premiere screening of the official preview for Back Up, the newest original film from award winning filmmaker Brian Mortensen and Mortenveld Productions.
Back Up is a unique mystery thriller told across three intersecting timelines: one moving forward, one moving in reverse, and one frozen in time. The story follows investigators racing to solve a murder in a quiet community where the only way to uncover the truth is to back up.
Show Us Your Shorts is a monthly gathering that celebrates short films, local filmmakers, and creative storytelling in a welcoming community setting.
