REDCAT ROY AND EDNA DISNEY/CALARTS THEATER

Every order decides what belongs and what is left outside. Order and Its Others listens at the margins through works that organize sound, power, freedom, and collectivity in radically different ways.
The evening opens with a triptych of works that place the individual body, voice, and imagination under pressure. Sofia Gubaidulina’s physically charged Dancer on a Tightrope, Gabriella Smith’s vivid and propulsive Carrot Revolution, and Luigi Nono’s La fabbrica illuminata move between precarity, transformation, and resistance, asking how a person might assert freedom within structures that seek to contain or overwhelm them.
The second half of the program is devoted to Louis Andriessen’s De Staat, a forceful meditation on music, politics, and the ensemble as a social body. Written in response to Plato’s Republic, De Staat takes up the ancient claim that music can threaten the state by turning the score into a political argument that doubts its own power even as it makes it: can music ever be free from the institutions and ideologies that decide what gets played, who gets to play it, and how we listen?
Across the evening, the ensemble turns sound into a living system, negotiating hierarchy, interdependence, and the tension between the individual and the whole. The players form an order, test where it holds and where it breaks, and ask what—or who—remains at its edges. To play together, the program suggests, is to practice democracy and perhaps even imagine another order.
Democracy Sessions returns in October 2026 for an expanded festival of music and performance taking place across Los Angeles. Building on the inaugural festival, organized by Wild Up and MOCA, presented in the days immediately following the 2024 US Presidential Election, this new iteration takes place in a moment shaped by censorship, polarization, and shifting public trust, and asks how art can function as a democratic practice—a means of gathering, listening, speaking, and acting together. Developed by Wild Up in partnership with MOCA, REDCAT, and CalArts, with related programming presented in collaboration with more organizations to be announced. Democracy Sessions 2026 is timed to align with the weeks leading up to the US midterm elections, and seeks to position music as a living civic practice and a space where free expression, cooperation, and collective action can be rehearsed in real time.

Wild Up presents the world premiere of a newly commissioned work by Shelley Washington for Wild Up musicians and The Collective Orchestra, an open-invitation community ensemble, in The Room Begins to Rise. Inspired by Émile Durkheim’s concept of “collective effervescence”—the energy that arises when people gather in shared emotion, attention, and action—the piece asks how music can become a practice of collective life.
Through a flexible score that combines notation, images, text, and prompts, the piece invites musicians of all backgrounds to a collaborative performance shaped by listening, responsiveness, and shared decision-making. Wild Up musicians serve as both performers and facilitators, teaching and learning the work alongside community participants. REDCAT will be reconfigured into a communal space, allowing performers and audience to occupy a shared field of resonance, proximity, and exchange—a space where music becomes a way to rehearse collective creativity, cooperation, and democratic action in real time.

Fractais Tropicais (Tropical Fractals) depicts environmental collapse and a vision of the post-apocalyptic world. On an interstellar journey, an intelligent system named Museo records the crew’s diaries as Brazilian archivists transport Earth’s last living remnants and their digitized copies. This fractured history of humanity is contrasted with a lone wanderer, perhaps the last man on Earth (played by Ivo Müller), who roams the ruined landscape as it slowly recovers. Shot in Super 16mm, the debut feature film by Leonardo Pirondi (CalArts BFA 22 + MFA 24 in Film and Video) crafts a textured analog visual world in contrast to slick, digitally rendered science fiction visual tropes.
The screening will be followed by a conversation with Leonardo Pirondi and Ivo Müller moderated by Jheanelle Brown.

Dimitri Chamblas delves into the life stories of two remarkable dancers in Ulysse Marion. Through long conversations with Marion Barbeau and Ulysse Zangs, Chamblas resurfaced childhood memories of their training with the Paris Opera Ballet and how their rigorous commitment to movement from a young age indelibly shaped their lives and transformed them into unique, interdisciplinary artists. Each performs a solo, revealing how their foundation in dance has intertwined with other practices—music for Ulysse, acting for Marion—to hone their bodies as finely tuned instruments with exceptional physical skill and emotional sensitivity. In this intimate piece, Chamblas uses choreography to rediscover buried memories as Barbeau and Zangs reveal the breadth of their feelings. Inspired by an experience in the California desert that reminded him that seemingly empty spaces are often inhabited by invisible presences, Chamblas transforms REDCAT into a vast, empty space to present Ulysse Marion as a portrait of artists laid bare.

Ulysse Marion was coproduced by la Villette, Paris - Initiatives d’Artistes, California Institute of the Arts, Agora, Cité Internationale de la Danse Montpellier Danse + CCN Occitanie, Théâtre de Nîmes, scène conventionnée d’intérêt national – art & création -danse contemporaine et de la Ville de Nîmes, Théâtre Molière - Sète, scène nationale archipel de Thau, Ménagerie de Verre as part of Studio Lab.

Drug Rehab for Couples in California
If you and your partner are ready to stop using drugs, you may be asking: Can we go to inpatient drug rehab together in California? Some residential programs accept both partners, but each person needs an individual assessment. The right option depends on your treatment needs, safety, the program’s policies, available space, and insurance.Couples Helpline - Free Assesment: 888-500-2110
Couples Rehab helps partners explore treatment options across Los Angeles County, Orange County, San Diego County, Riverside County, San Bernardino County, Ventura County, and throughout California. Whether you live in Los Angeles, Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Irvine, San Diego, Temecula, Riverside, or another California community, call (888) 500-2110 to discuss available options and request an insurance benefits check.

Frequently asked questions

Can couples attend inpatient drug rehab together in California? Yes, some programs admit partners at the same time. Each person receives an individual assessment and treatment plan. Ask whether the facility offers couples counseling and how much contact partners can have during treatment.
Do we have to be married? No. Some programs consider unmarried partners. Admission policies vary.
Can we share a room? Possibly, but many programs house partners separately. Confirm room arrangements directly with the admissions team.
What if one of us needs detox? Tell the admissions team what each partner has been using and when they last used it. A clinician can assess whether either person needs withdrawal management before residential treatment. Detox and rehab may take place at different facilities.
Will insurance cover treatment for both partners? Coverage is checked separately for each person. Network rules, medical necessity, prior authorization, deductibles, and other costs may differ even if you share a policy.
What if only one partner has an addiction? The partner needing residential treatment may be admitted while the other participates in family or couples sessions, if the program offers them and clinicians find them appropriate.
Is attending treatment together always the best choice? No. When there is violence, coercion, or another safety concern, clinicians may recommend separate care or postpone joint sessions.
How do we choose a California couples rehab program? Ask whether the residential facility has a current California license, admits both partners, provides the appropriate level of care, accepts your insurance, and has a plan for treatment after discharge.

Find Couples Rehab Options Near You

Couples Rehab helps people explore detox, residential drug rehab, and continuing care in Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, and other California areas.
