The Museum of Modern Art announces a film series, <a href="https://www.moma.org/calendar/film/5914" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Silent Movie Week 2026</a>, from July 29–August 3, 2026.
MoMA's fourth annual Silent Movie Week offers an uncommonly strong lineup of major films by major directors, including masterpieces by D. W. Griffith, Buster Keaton, Charles Chaplin, Raoul Walsh, Ernst Lubitsch, John Ford, and F. W. Murnau. For those unfamiliar with the sublime beauties of silent filmmaking, there could hardly be a better introduction. For those already familiar with the form, these newly restored editions offer a new level of experience.
It's a tribute to the perspicacity of Iris Barry, MoMA's first film curator in the 1930s, that six of the seven films featured in this year's program are MoMA restorations (and the seventh, Sunrise, was restored by the San Francisco Film Preserve using some elements from MoMA). At a time when no other museums were collecting films as works of art, Barry toured the world and acquired original prints of a great many silent and early sound classics. In many cases, these prints remain the best source material for these important works today.
All seven programs have live musical accompaniment. The series opens with D. W. Griffith's Way Down East, accompanied by a 10-piece orchestra performing the original 1920 score—composed and compiled by William Frederick Peters and Louis Silvers under Griffith's supervision—in a deeply researched reconstruction by musicologist Gillian B. Anderson. The presentation of John Ford's 3 Bad Men marks the premiere of a newly recorded orchestral score composed and conducted by Timothy Brock. Other features will be accompanied by MoMA's rotating cast of world-class silent film accompanists, Makia Matsumura, Ben Model, and Donald Sosin.

The Museum of Modern Art announces an exhibition, <a href="https://www.moma.org/calendar/exhibitions/5920" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">It's Alive!: A Century of Animation from the Collection</a><a href="https://www.moma.org/calendar/exhibitions/5920" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">,</a> from August 1, 2026–Summer 2027.
Since the birth of motion pictures, animation has enchanted audiences. At MoMA, its creative evolution has been celebrated by more than a hundred programs and acquisitions from both independent filmmakers and major studios alike. Drawing from this history and spanning more than 100 years of expression and aesthetics, It's Alive! shares the work of more than 35 artists and filmmakers who advanced the medium. The exhibition highlights its roots in New York and how the city remained a hub for innovative animation.
Felix the Cat, Koko the Clown, Gertie the Dinosaur, and other enduring cartoon icons of the silent era (1890s–1920s) prove how significant character-based animation was to establishing the medium. The hand-drawn practices of their creators—including Otto Messmer, Dave Fleischer, and Winsor McCay—were fundamental to the characters' appeal. Works from later decades by artists such as Isadore Sparber, Mary Beams, Kathy Rose, Tissa David, and David Erhlich demonstrate that black-and-white line drawing remained a vital style through the predigital period.
The addition of color in the 1930s, and the modernization of animation design led by John Hubley in the 1950s as a response to the classical style of Disney, influenced a number of independent artists in later decades. Jane Aaron, John Canemaker, Faith and Emily Hubley, George Griffin, Candy Kugel, Jeff Scher, and Michael Sporn all called New York home. Balancing projects for Public Television and MTV with personal filmmaking, these animators created bodies of work that became a force in pop culture and resonated worldwide. It's Alive!
is a testament to a rich period of the city's movie-making history, and to the diversity and delights of animation.

The Museum of Modern Art announces a film series, <a href="https://www.moma.org/calendar/film/5913" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Rob Tregenza's FAST</a>, from August 12–18, 2026.
Rob Tregenza has worked at the leading edge of American independent cinema since his 1988 debut Talking to Strangers, a film built entirely from extended single-take sequences shot in nine locations across the city of Baltimore. His subsequent films—including Inside/Out (1997), Gavagai (2016), and
The Fishing Place (2024)—constitute a body of work defined less by narrative than by the physical weight of recorded reality. Largely self-financed and operating outside the festival-circuit economy, he remains one of the few American filmmakers whose practice has more in common with Straub-Huillet or Chantal Akerman than with anything produced in the American independent mainstream.
Tregenza's sixth feature returns to the American South—shot on location in Lexington and Richmond, Virginia—after his Norwegian excursions in Gavagai and The Fishing Place. For Sterling (Madison Pankey), a sort of present day Alice, the graveyard Lotus she redeems becomes a totem, a saturated phenomenon permitting her to move freely in time on a phantom road. It is a sort of Ford but never a DeLorean. A Southern woman with a fair deal of historical baggage and deep secrets, Sterling journeys back to her rural home, the Lotus takes her through the shadow of the valley into the adjoining worlds of the living and the dead. Desiring to become an F1 driver, Sterling must go fast and hard, against and through all tunnels imagined or concrete. FAST is presented here in its world premiere.
