Immigration. Free Speech. National Security. Where are the lines? Join two lawyers for a constitutional conversation on Immigration.
Constitution Conversations, a non-partisan program developed under the auspices of the New York County Lawyers Association, will be a two-hour session facilitated by two lawyers who will lead a discussion of the procedural rights non-citizens have under the Fifth Amendment’s due process clause when the federal government seeks to deport them.
Seats limited. Register at Eventbrite eventbrite.com/e/constitution-conversation-registration-1998915791943?aff=oddtdtcreator

Select the number of attendees and consider making a donation in one of the fields below "Free ticket", then click "Check out" at the bottom. On the next page, fill out the form.)
The session will also cover whether and how the First Amendment, which protects freedom of speech and assembly, limits steps the government can take against lawful resident non-citizens because of views they have expressed on particular issues. This will not be a lecture. Rather, it will be an opportunity for participants to ask and discuss the hard questions that these issues and the litigation over them have raised, such as:

What rights do persons illegally in the country who are accused of being part of a terrorist organization have to challenge the government’s decision to deport them under a 1798 law, the Alien Enemies Act?

What is the balance between efficient immigration enforcement and constitutional due process?

Can lawful non-citizen residents engaging in speech and protest activities permitted to citizens under the First Amendment be deported because the government claims their speech jeopardizes US foreign policy interests?

A space for reflection, storytelling, and connection on the issue of immigration across diverse experiences and viewpoints.
Join us for an interactive and engaging gathering designed to bring people together for honest conversations about how immigration has affected our lives and what is at stake for our community. The Forum is a 90-minute experience that creates space for reflection, storytelling, and connection across diverse experiences and viewpoints.
Everyone is welcome to attend regardless of political identification.
Together, we’ll explore personal stories and policy ideas through a conversation, inviting participants to share how immigration—past or present—has touched their lives, families, or communities, as well as share a policy that they support relating to immigration. All attendees will be invited to participate actively in a dialogue with each other.
The stories from pre-selected panelists will start off the conversation and will be gathered and possibly included in Braver Angels’ Report to the Nation. The purpose is to capture and elevate the voices of everyday Americans in the national conversation.
This event is ideal for individuals who are curious, concerned, and simply want to listen deeply and speak honestly about immigration in a respectful, community-based setting. Participants will have a better understanding of each other’s experiences and how they have shaped views on Immigration.
Join us in building a better conversation—one story at a time.In partnership with Braver Angels, the largest organization in America bringing people together across political divides.
