Location: Saxe Room Audience: AdultWant to grow plants but don't have a large yard? Discover how to create a thriving garden in small or limited spaces!
Participants will learn practical techniques for growing flowers, herbs, and vegetables in containers, raised beds, and other compact spaces. Our presenter will cover container gardening, vertical growing, and selecting the right plants for limited environments. You'll also learn about soil management and watering strategies that help gardens thrive in space-conscious settings. Whether you're gardening on a balcony, patio, or other small area, you'll leave with the knowledge and inspiration to create a healthy, beautiful garden—no matter how much space you have!
Our presenter Gretel Anspach is a data-driven, retired systems engineer who brings an engineer’s precision to every horticultural endeavor. A mathematics graduate of MIT, she spent her career at Raytheon before channeling her analytical mindset into the world of horticulture. She currently serves as a trustee of Massachusetts Horticultural Society and is a Lifetime Master Gardener, recognized with MMGA’s 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award. With over two decades of experience in food pantry gardening, Gretel first led Raytheon’s company garden initiative, then went on to independently establish and maintain a 20,000-square-foot production garden serving the Marlborough and Maynard food pantries. Gretel is known for demystifying the science behind gardening, combining her background in math and systems thinking with a passion for sharing knowledge. Her work bridges the gap between data and dirt—proving that logical thinking and healthy soil can grow more than just plants.

Worcester Public Library presents a book talk by Anne Marie Murphy on her new book A Proper Fit: Women at Work in a City of Corsets. Discover a city full of women making corsets: Worcester, Massachusetts from 1860 to 1980. The city hosted over 120 corset-making businesses and half of them were owned by women. This book tells the stories of many of those female business owners, how they got into the business, how they learned to make this challenging garment, and how they self-supported in the city for over a century, as small shop "corsetieres" and forewomen and traveling saleswomen and even as a factory owner.Banx Room

Ghosts! Strange Tales from 13 Years of Paranormal Investigating
Explore unexplained evidence and lessons learned from a seasoned paranormal investigator. Dr. Joanna MacGugan shares stories from her paranormal adventures and demonstrates how you, too, can investigate haunted locations.
About Joanna MacGugan:
Joanna MacGugan, PhD, is a social historian and paranormal investigator. She has been fascinated with the paranormal since she experienced disembodied voices and footsteps in Edinburgh’s underground vaults in 2014. Her goal is to always seek the historical truth behind hauntings.
Joanna grew up in Chelmsford, Massachusetts; Stuttgart, Germany; and Huntingdonshire, England. Her European adventures fueled her passion for macabre history, especially cemeteries and burial culture. Her master’s research centered on early Celtic Otherworld mythology. For her PhD research, she turned to coroners and capital punishment in 14th-century Ireland. In 2023, she published her first book, Social Memory, Reputation and the Politics of Death in the Medieval Irish Lordship.
Joanna is now a full-time copy editor and independent scholar. Her current research projects focus on the haunted Oliver House in Middleborough, Massachusetts, and supernatural stories from records of the Salem Witch Trials.

Off The Rails

The **2nd Annual Woostock Art & Music Festival** returns to downtown Worcester on Saturday, October 10 for an afternoon and evening celebrating **music, art and community**.
Hosted at Off The Rails, Woostock brings together an eclectic lineup of Worcester-area musicians alongside local artists, makers, food vendors, small businesses and community organizations for a festival built around the creative community that makes Worcester special.
Expect live music throughout the day, local art and vendors to explore, food and drinks, and plenty of opportunities to discover the people and projects shaping Worcester's creative scene.
This year's festival begins before guests even reach the stage: attendees will enter through a colorful art installation created from hand-painted vinyl records made collaboratively by Woostock musicians, artists, vendors, volunteers and their families.
Woostock will also include a special tribute to the late Worcester musician **Jorge “Tasteless Jack” Ramirez**, with his friends taking his scheduled festival slot to celebrate his life and music.
Whether you come for a favorite band or to discover something new, Woostock is an invitation to spend the day experiencing Worcester through the people who make, play, create and contribute here.
