The focus of this morning excursion will be on continuing breeders, such as House Wrens and Common Yellowthroats, and welcoming fall migrants, especially the warblers – Blackpoll, Palm, Nashville, and many others. Meet at the Community Garden area off the Winchester Street entrance to Nahanton Park. &nbsp;Waterproof shoes and binoculars are recommended. A steady rain will cancel the walk. This free community event is perfect for all ages, especially kids who are naturally fascinated by the wonders of nature and butterflies. Join us for a unique opportunity to learn about these incredible creatures and discover how you can help protect them by providing habitat.

<h3>What to Expect at the Monarch Festival</h3>
<ul><li>Live Monarch Encounters:&nbsp;Kids have a natural fascination with nature and butterflies and will enjoy&nbsp;seeing monarchs up close in every stage of their life cycle – from tiny eggs and munching caterpillars to fascinating chrysalises and newly emerged adult butterflies. We expect to be releasing some!</li><li>Butterfly Garden Tours: Explore Wellington Park’s beautiful gardens, featuring native milkweed and other pollinator-friendly plants crucial for monarch survival.&nbsp;&nbsp;Get to know and recognize the three typical milkweeds for our New England region.&nbsp;</li><li>Bug Tour:&nbsp; Get to know the pollinator insects in your garden with a&nbsp; bug tour of the Wellington gardens. Learn how to easily photograph them with your smartphone and ID with iNaturalist.</li><li>Kids’ Zone: Enjoy a variety of butterfly-themed games, activities, arts &amp; crafts, and coloring sheets, courtesy of the Newton Parks, Recreation, and Culture Department.&nbsp; Wellington Park also has swings, a toddler play area, and a sensory dome play structure for older children.</li><li>Milkweed Exchange: &nbsp;Monarchs rely on milkweed for their survival for laying eggs and as food for their caterpillar stage.&nbsp;&nbsp;To help these incredible insects, consider planting New England native milkweed varieties like Common Milkweed, Swamp Milkweed, or Butterfly Milkweed in your garden. Pick up some&nbsp;free milkweed plants and seeds&nbsp;at the festival to help you get started!&nbsp; If you&nbsp; have milkweed plants, seeds, or seed pods &nbsp;to share, please bring them along to our Exchange table. Please label seeds (in small bags or envelopes) and plants according to the type of milkweed.</li><li>Expert Insights: Meet some local monarch experts who maintain official Monarch Waystations and earn their tips for attracting these pollinators to your own garden.&nbsp; &nbsp;</li><li>Prize Drawings:&nbsp;Registered attendees will have a free chance to win exciting butterfly-related prizes!</li><li>Directions &amp; Parking: Wellington Park is located in West Newton, a few blocks north of West Newton Square. Explore a mix of beautiful and functional private and public landscapes during the Fourth Annual Newton Pollinator Garden Tour, taking place on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from Noon to 4:00 pm, with a rain date the following weekend, Saturday, September 26, same time. Focused on gardens showcasing mostly native plants across several Newton villages, this self-paced tour will demonstrate how native flora can beautifully sustain vital local pollinators. Organized by the Newton Community Pollinator Project in conjunction with Newton Conservators, Newton Parks Recreation and Culture Department, Green Newton, Friends of Cold Spring Park, Friends of Wellington Park, and Mothers Out Front Newton, the event is free, but preregistration is requested so that garden maps and info can be emailed to participants in advance.&nbsp;

On Sunday, September 20th, Sudbury will host our third inaugural <a href="https://kids.pmc.org/sudbury" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Sudbury PMC Kids Bike Ride</a>.&nbsp;Our ride is a 1-mile loop that riders may enjoy as long as they would like. The one mile course is entirely paved and loops through the beautiful residential neighborhoods of historic Sudbury. Parents are welcome to ride with their children but it is not required. If a parent chooses to accompany their child on the bike, we ask that they register as volunteers.&nbsp;
Many kids choose to ride the loop 3-6-12 or even 15 times. We encourage riders to participate as long as they would like. We will have special badges for riders who accomplish 5-8-12 and 15 miles, too! Please indicate at registration an estimate of your rider's total distance (this will help us for event organization).&nbsp;There is also an enclosed parking lot loop all starting from Curtis Middle School in Sudbury, MA. (Adults may opt to register as volunteers if they would like to ride with the kids). Before the ride there will be music and bike decorating; during the ride and following there will be an Ice-Cream Truck, Food Truck, Coffee Truck, huge bouncy castle, lawn games, music and more. All registered riders will get a free ice cream from our friends at Trombetta’s Farm Ice Cream. Registration takes place from 8:30am-9:45am. The ride is from 10:00am-11:30am, and food and games will be available from 10:00am - 1:00pm.
“The Pan-Mass Challenge is a Massachusetts-based bike-a-thon that raises more money for charity than any other single athletic fundraising event in the country. Always held the first weekend in August, the PMC raises funds for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a world leader in adult and pediatric cancer treatment and research. Each summer, thousands of riders and volunteers from 43 states and 12 countries participate in the PMC, all with a common goal: to find a cure for cancer.
100 percent of all rider-raised funds go directly to cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund. The PMC is Dana-Farber’s single largest supporter and is 62 percent of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue. Since 1980, the PMC has raised $972 million for Dana-Farber.”
The Sudbury PMC Kids Bike Ride empowers young participants to contribute to a meaningful cause while enjoying a fun activity. By offering multiple course options, every child will have the opportunity to participate and make a difference - regardless of age or ability. Each ride distance is carefully planned to be safe and enjoyable, with designated routes through historic Sudbury neighborhoods that are well-marked and closely monitored by volunteers. For the youngest participants, the tot lot loop provides a secure environment where kids can ride in a contained area - strollers, scooters, tricycles are ALL welcome!
Beyond the joy of bike riding, the Sudbury PMC Kids Bike Ride serves as a powerful educational experience for children, teaching them about the impact of collective efforts in fighting cancer. As they pedal for a purpose, they learn about empathy, community involvement, and the importance of supporting breakthroughs in treatment and cures at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. This event not only raises crucial funds for cancer research but also instills valuable life lessons in the young riders; collectively we all pedal towards a more cancer-free future. As with all PMC rides, every penny donated goes directly to cancer treatment and research at Dana-Farber.
