San Leandro Public Library

Community education program returns to San Leandro Public Library following positive response in Castro Valley and San Leandro
Have you ever attended a Catholic Mass and wondered what was happening, why certain things are done, or what the prayers, gestures, and traditions mean?
There is far more happening during a Catholic Mass than meets the eye. Behind its prayers, gestures, symbols, and traditions are centuries of history, biblical foundations, and theological meaning. Much of this can easily go unnoticed without an opportunity to understand what is taking place and why.
Residents of Castro Valley and surrounding communities will have another opportunity to explore these questions when "A Friendly Introduction to the Catholic Mass" is presented at the San Leandro Public Library on Thursday, November 19, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The free, two-hour community education presentation offers a straightforward introduction to the Catholic Mass, its history, and the meaning behind its prayers, symbols, and traditions. It is designed for people with little or no knowledge of Catholic worship, as well as those who have attended Mass for years but would like a better understanding of its deeper meaning.
The upcoming session follows two previous presentations at the Castro Valley and San Leandro Public Libraries, which together attracted 23 participants. Attendees included Catholics, Protestants, and people with little or no Catholic background. Feedback from both presentations was very positive, and several participants expressed interest in additional sessions so their family members and friends could attend.
The presentation was developed by Thom Fresquez, a local Catholic layperson who attends Mass daily. His motivation grew out of his own experience of attending Mass for many years without fully understanding its deeper meaning.
"As I learned more about the Mass, I realized how much there was to understand and how many people, including Catholics themselves, might have questions about it," Fresquez said. "I wanted to create the kind of introduction I wish had been available to me many years ago—a simple, approachable explanation in a setting where people could feel comfortable asking questions."
Participants will be introduced to:
<ul>
<li>The history and purpose of the Catholic Mass.</li>
<li>The meaning behind its prayers, gestures, and rituals.</li>
<li>The symbolism found in Catholic churches.</li>
<li>The significance of the Eucharist and what Catholics believe about it.</li>
</ul>
The presentation welcomes everyone, whether they have no religious background, belong to another faith tradition, are former Catholics, or simply want to better understand a tradition that remains central to the lives of Catholics around the world.
The class is educational in nature. It is not intended to persuade anyone to adopt the Catholic faith, but simply to help participants better understand the deeper meaning of the Mass and its significance to Catholics.
Fresquez has chosen to offer the presentation in a public library to provide a neutral, welcoming setting outside a church.
"I believe understanding another person's beliefs doesn't require us to adopt them," Fresquez said. "But taking the time to understand those beliefs can help us better understand the people who hold them. My hope is simply that everyone who attends leaves with a clearer understanding of the Catholic Mass and why it is so meaningful to Catholics."
Attendance is limited to 15 participants to create a relaxed, conversational atmosphere where everyone has an opportunity to ask questions and participate in the discussion.

A complimentary lunch for Bay Area women on health, care and independence.<h2>Caring for everyone around you has been your priority. . .</h2>
Your children. Your parents. Your partner. Your colleagues and clients who counted on you. Caregiving is something women do beautifully — and too often we put off planning for who will care for us.
Researchers at the Stanford Center on Longevity are asking a big question through their New Map of Life™ initiative: how can we best live a 100-year life? One of their ideas we shall focus on is this: the goal isn’t just a longer life span, but a longer health span — more years that are healthy, mobile, sharp, independent, AND, if I may add, the financial resources that allow you to design your desired lifestyle beyond today.Over a delightful lunch, you’ll learn:
1. Everyday habits that support healthy aging and vitality — with real-life stories.2. How lifestyle choices today may help delay or reduce future care needs.3. What Medicare does not cover, and the real cost of care in the Bay Area.4. Why waiting too long to plan can quietly narrow your choices.5. A private conversation guide to share with the people you love.Join us for a meaningful conversation about living longer, living well and designing your life beyond today. Bring a friend, share fresh perspectives, and take a step toward designing the life you envision. Reserve your spot today! Seats are limited.

<h2>🌿 Why Gather?</h2>
Throughout human history, gathering has been woven into the rhythms of life. With music, art, and ceremony, we have gathered together to mark seasons, share stories, celebrate, reflect, and support each other through the seasons of life.
Modern life can make connection harder to find. At times, many of us move through our days feeling disconnected—from nature, from meaning, from our creativity, and sometimes from one another.
Earth Rhythms Circle offers a space to reconnect.
Together, we’ll create opportunities to slow down, notice the season we’re in, reconnect with the natural world, and remember that we don’t have to move through life alone.
<h2>🌾 The Setting</h2>
We gather at Heirloom East Bay, a beautiful working farm in the Castro Valley hills.
Surrounded by open land, gardens, and animals—including the resident goats!—the farm offers a unique opportunity to step away from everyday life and be more present with the natural world.
<h2>✨ What a Typical Circle Includes</h2>
Each gathering will be shaped by the season, so no two circles will be exactly alike. A typical circle may include:
Welcome Arrive early to settle in, explore the land, visit with the animals, grab a snack, and meet fellow participants.
Grounding A guided reflection to prepare for the day and set intentions, followed by a mindful nature walk to connect with the land.
Ceremonial Practice A guided ceremony, creative practice, or seasonal activity exploring the themes and rhythms of the season.
Embodiment &amp; Integration An immersive sound bath, somatic movement, yoga, meditation, or another body-based practice designed to support reflection and integration.
Community Time for sharing, conversation, and connection within a thoughtfully facilitated and welcoming space.
<h2>🤍 Who Is This For?</h2>
Earth Rhythms Circle is for anyone who is looking for:
<ul><li>A deeper connection to nature and the rhythms of the seasons</li><li>Space to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with yourself</li><li>Opportunities for creativity, exploration, and personal growth</li><li>Meaningful connection and community</li><li>A more intentional approach to self-care</li><li>A chance to step away from the pace of everyday life</li></ul>
<h2>🌎 An Inclusive Space</h2>
Earth Rhythms Circle is open to adults 18+ of all identities and backgrounds.
All religious and spiritual backgrounds are welcome, including those who do not identify with a spiritual tradition. The circle is not based on any specific religion or set of beliefs.
You are always empowered to bring your full self, exactly as you are, and choose your own level of participation.
<h2>🌱 What to Bring</h2>
<ul><li>Yoga mat</li><li>Blanket and pillow for the sound bath (optional, but recommended)</li><li>Water bottle</li><li>Journal for reflection</li><li>Comfortable clothing and layers for both indoor and outdoor activities</li></ul>
Doors will open at 12:45pm to allow you time to settle before we start at 1:00pm. This is approximately a 3.5-hour experience, but we will end no later than 5pm.
