The Montclair History Center has been awarded the 2026 Innovative Archives Award by the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference (MARAC) New Jersey Caucus in recognition of its leadership in preserving and sharing local history. The award highlights the organization’s commitment to inclusive storytelling, strong community partnerships and collaborations, oral history initiatives, and expanding free public access to MHC’s collections. MARAC’s selection committee congratulates Executive Director Angelica Diggs, Collections Manager Erin Benz, and the Board of Trustees for their dedication to preserving and sharing Montclair’s diverse history.

MARAC Innovative Archives Award Presentation at Montclair History Center

In 1965, when the Crane House and Historic YWCA was saved from demolition, moved, and restored to tell the story of its earliest occupants. Historic preservation was in its infancy and there were no standards to guide these preservationists. Through a short introduction and tour of the Crane House and Historic YWCA, discover the Roots of Historic Preservation, putting in context some of the decisions made by the early preservationists who restored the Crane House in the 1960s.
Tours begin at 12:00 pm, 1:00 pm, and 2:00 pm at the Nathaniel Crane House &amp; Visitor Center located at the back of the parking lot. No reservations required.

In Montclair’s early days, Watchung Avenue divided the Dutch farms of Speertown from the English farms of Cranetown. That rural landscape changed dramatically in the late 1800s with the arrival of the railroad to Montclair. With new rail access to New York City, farms gave way to business districts and commuter neighborhoods built around the stations. Join us for a talk in partnership with The Judy Weston Gardens and discover how the railroad helped build modern Montclair and its effects on the&nbsp;Watchung Park and Plaza. This is a free program. Montclair History Center and Aging in Montclair have teamed up to present two live interview events where longtime residents share their stories and the impact they've had on the Montclair community. This event is free and made possible by Partners for Health Foundation. This event is offered in person or through zoom. Registration required.Over the past two decades, Melissa Walker has led transformative change in arts education as Founder and President of JAZZ HOUSE KiDS, building the organization into a nationally acclaimed institution serving tens of thousands of students through world-class education and performance. An award-winning jazz vocalist and graduate of Brown University, she was recently named a CNN Champion for Change. She has also been recognized as one of NJBiz’s Best 50 Women in Business, and received honors including the Jazz Journalists Association’s Jazz Hero Award, the Russ Berrie Making a Difference Award, and the 92nd Street Y’s Extraordinary Women Award. Walker also serves as Executive Producer of the award-winning Montclair Jazz Festival, the largest free jazz festival in the NYC area.

The Montclair History Center, Montclair Community Farms, and Rutgers Cooperative Extension 4-H partner each year to host a fun, nature, and history-filled camp for youth ages 6 - 12. Farm Camp is located at 108-110 Orange Road in Montclair, New Jersey.
Farm Camp supports youth development by promoting a positive interest in nature, historical living, and agriculture.&nbsp; Our mission is to provide the best camp experience for youth while also providing a beneficial learning experience about food, animals, our earth, and its agricultural past. Our campers will be in the garden each day and participate in age-appropriate activities. Runs July to&nbsp;August.

Alzheimer’s New Jersey® will host its annual Walk to Fight Alzheimer’s® on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at South Mountain Reservation in West Orange. The event will begin at the Clipper Pavilion and bring the community together to raise awareness and funds for programs supporting individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.
Day-of registration will open at 9:00 a.m. followed by a kick-off rally at 10:00 a.m. The walk will officially begin at 10:30 a.m. Participants will enjoy a scenic walk around the Orange Reservoir. There will be music, entertainment, refreshments, and door prizes.
Funds raised from the event will support Alzheimer’s New Jersey® programs, including a statewide Helpline, family support groups, community and caregiver education and the Respite Care and Wellness program. These services provide essential guidance, emotional support, and relief for caregivers navigating the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. 
“We invite everyone to walk with us. There will be lots of energy and fun,” said Ken Zaentz, President and CEO of Alzheimer’s New Jersey®. “More than 600,000 people in New Jersey are affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Families rely on Alzheimer’s New Jersey® for personal and confidential assistance, education, and support. As the number of families impacted continues to grow, community support is more important than ever.”
As part of Essex County’s Essex Cares program, Alzheimer’s New Jersey® will offer event attendees a special benefit on the day of the walk only. With proof of participation, attendees will receive $5 admission each to the Turtle Back Zoo, Mini Safari Golf, and Codey Arena.
There is no fee to register for the walk; however, fundraising is strongly encouraged and vital to sustaining the organization’s programs. All registered walkers will receive a promotional item the day of the event, and those who raise $75 or more will receive a complimentary event t-shirt. Dogs are welcome, provided they are leashed.
