Southampton History Museum

Step into the barn and leave your worries at the door for a lively evening of traditional American country dancing. Whether you're an experienced dancer or have never set foot in a dance like this before, everyone is invited to join in.

Acclaimed dance caller Chart Guthrie&nbsp;will lead the evening, teaching each dance and calling out the steps as you go. With his guidance, you'll quickly find yourself joining in with traditional country dances&nbsp;that have brought communities together for generations. The emphasis is on having fun, meeting your fellow dancers, and enjoying the music.

Providing the evening's lively traditional music will be Mary Nagin, Max Rowland and Larry Moser, whose playing will give the dance its infectious energy and old-time character. As the music starts and the calls begin, dancers will form sets, circles, and squares, moving together through a constantly changing series of dances.

Join&nbsp; museum curator Stephen Gould for a guided walk through Stephen Sayre’s American Revolution&nbsp;and discover the fascinating story behind Southampton’s most unlikely revolutionary. Explore the exhibit through fresh insights, intriguing artifacts, and the local history surrounding Sayre’s remarkable life.

Stephen Gould he researches, interprets, and shares the history of Southampton and the surrounding East End. His work draws extensively from the Museum’s collections and archives, with particular interests ranging from the American Revolution and Civil War to the World Wars and Southampton’s maritime history. Gould has contributed numerous articles and collection features to the Museum, bringing to light the stories of local residents, veterans, historic sites, and artifacts. He has also played a leading role in developing exhibitions, including Homefront to Battlefront: Southampton During World War II, which explored the experiences and contributions of Southampton residents during the Second World War.

Walk with a Curator: Stephen Sayre's American Revolution

Led by fiber artist <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ericalynnhuberty.com/" rel="nofollow noopener">Erica-Lynn Huberty</a>, this hands-on workshop explores the art of textile needlework as practiced in Southampton during the 17th and 18th centuries. 

Continuing to explore historic embroidery, this class will focus on intermediate to more advanced hand embroidery stitches, in particular Botanical designs which were popular in Southampton Colony at the time of the Revolution. Participants will learn&nbsp;to translate a line drawing into an embroidered botanical image.&nbsp;The class will cover principles of composition and design, color theory, and&nbsp;&nbsp;learning and practice of a set of specific stitches.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Space is extremely limited for this wonderful experience. Advanced ticket purchase is required. 
Workshop Cost: $20.00 per person&nbsp;
Materials included:&nbsp;&nbsp;Hoop, Muslin with Pre-drawn Design, Pencil for Drawing, Needle and Embroidery Floss.

Her work mingles textiles and sewing arts techniques with watercolor and ink, embroidery, crochet and knitting, loom-woven grounds, mediums overlapping as if done simultaneously.

Jay Heritage Center

The Jay Heritage Center (JHC) is proud to welcome educators and the general public to our site during September 2026, Constitution Month, to commemorate our nation’s journey towards independence and democracy. The free program is co-sponsored by the Mid-Hudson Social Studies Council. The event will be the first of many lively conversation about America at 250 with some of our country’s leading history scholars. It is open to teachers throughout the Mid Hudson and Sound Shore communities as well as Fairfield County.
Professors David Blight, Frank Cogliano, Joanne Freeman and Beverly Gage will take the stage at the new Wachenheim Center to examine the history of the nation-state and the contested nature of American national identity. The panel will discuss what the United States and the Constitution have meant to citizens over time and how that vision has changed or stayed constant. &nbsp;The event is FREE but registration is required.
