This drawing class will focus on subjects from nature: flowers, trees, and landscape. Each week, a topic will be presented to introduce a variety of methods and materials. Individual expression and creative applications will be reinforced to produce individual results. Observational drawing, botanical drawings, and elements of art will be covered. Blithewold’s gardens and arboretum inspire the classwork.
The main material will be colored pencil with various options for multi-media. Materials will be provided. Students of all abilities are encouraged to attend.

Join Chris Fletcher, arborist and local storyteller, for a discussion on maintaining Bristol’s urban forests. Bristol was one of the first towns to develop American urban forests. Blithewold is at the heart of Bristol’s involvement in the collection of trees from international sources, along with other important 19th-century landscapes. Bristol’s downtown streetscape, Juniper Hill Cemetery’s gardenesque landscape, and North Farm’s arboretum all played major roles in the development of Bristol’s unique urban forest. How are these landscapes surviving the stresses of urban life? Are the practices of the Green Industry being applied correctly? What are the common myths that fail us?
If you live in Bristol, you are living in the remnants of a 19th-century forest. You walk or drive under the canopies of trees planted with foresight and the idea that generations to come would enjoy their longevity. Your trees, even if planted a month ago, are part of a tradition of Bristolians reforesting urban landscapes. Join us for a discussion of the ‘dos and don’ts’ when caring for your trees and our greater urban landscape. The lecture will be followed by a tour of Blithewold’s significant trees.

Environmental Educator Connie Ganley will guide you through our natural spaces to take in and connect with the sights, sounds, and smells on this leisurely stroll. A fun way to start your day, conversing about nature, history, and possibly going down a few “rabbit holes”! Bring your camera for some unforgettable photo opportunities.

Join us to taste different sparkling wines while learning not only about the process of making them but also the various sugar levels associated with Brut and Dry.

Join us as we taste different white wines from around the world, and see if you can discover a new favorite. We’ll discuss aromatic and non-aromatic grape varietals and how the winemaking methods impact the wine’s taste.

Through demonstrations, learn the basics of watercolor tools, color, composition, and paint applications as you learn new techniques and work on developing your inner talent. Individualized instruction will guide each student in creating beautiful watercolor paintings.

Mary Ellen is a Signature artist of the RI Watercolor Society and has been teaching for many years.
