<h1>Transparency Should Not Require a Treasure Hunt</h1>

Public school districts frequently speak about transparency, community partnership, and accountability. But transparency is not measured by slogans at Board of Education meetings or carefully crafted public statements. Transparency is measured by how administrators respond when taxpayers and parents ask direct questions.
Recently, I contacted district administration seeking answers regarding athletic programs, facility allocation, coaching decisions, and capital spending within the West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District. The questions were straightforward:
How much money has been invested in capital projects at each high school since 2018? How are athletic resources allocated between schools? What oversight exists for coaching and athletic program decisions? What systems ensure parent concerns are actually addressed?
The response I received from Ms. Cincotta was essentially: go find it in the school minutes.
Think about that for a moment.
Taxpayers fund the salaries of administrators, business offices, communications departments, and records personnel. Yet when a parent asks for basic information regarding public spending and district decision-making, the response is to independently search through years of Board of Education minutes.
That is not transparency. That is deflection.
During my conversation with district administration, repeated references were made to the differing “needs” of each school as justification for decisions and spending priorities. However, when asked to provide specific examples or explain the rationale behind those priorities, no meaningful answers were given.
Parents deserve more than vague talking points.
If one school receives different treatment, different investments, or different athletic support than another, the community has a right to understand why. Public institutions should be able to clearly explain how decisions are made, how resources are distributed, and how priorities are established.
The concerns extend beyond facilities and finances.
Questions regarding the wrestling program and coaching stability also remain unanswered. Parents still do not know:
<ul><li>Whether a wrestling coach is being hired</li><li>What timeline exists for that process</li><li>Whether maintaining the program is even considered a district priority</li><li>What standards are used to evaluate coaches</li><li>How program stability factors into staffing decisions</li></ul>
These are not unreasonable questions. They are fundamental questions about leadership, accountability, and student programs.
Equally troubling is the absence of a clear process for handling unresolved parent concerns. What systems exist to ensure complaints are tracked to completion? Who is responsible for follow-through? What oversight mechanisms exist when concerns are repeatedly raised without resolution? Mr. Aderhold and his administration have been ignoring these questions for the last 10 days. There is no communication with the community, no accountability and no interest to engage in a respectful conversation. Silence, that is all I have received from Aderhold and the BOE. Why? What are they hiding?&nbsp;
These questions matter because public trust matters.
School districts should welcome accountability, not avoid it. Parents should not feel dismissed for asking questions about programs funded by their taxes and attended by their children. Administrators should not treat requests for transparency as inconveniences, nor should parents be told to comb through years of meeting minutes to obtain answers that district leadership should be able to provide directly.
Community members are not asking for favors. We are asking for information, clarity, and accountability from public officials entrusted with managing public resources.
Transparency should not require a treasure hunt through years of meeting minutes. It should be part of the job.

<h1>Public Trust Cannot Thrive Where Questions Are Unwelcome</h1>
The strength of a public school district is measured not by test scores, press releases, or strategic plans. It is measured by the trust that exists between district leadership and the community it serves.
In West Windsor-Plainsboro, that trust is increasingly being tested.
For years, Superintendent David Aderhold and his administration have spoken about community engagement and stakeholder partnerships. Yet many parents, taxpayers, and residents who ask difficult questions have experienced something very different. There appears to be a growing divide between those who support district leadership and those who seek greater transparency, accountability, or explanation. The former are welcomed. The latter are often viewed as inconveniences.
True leadership is not demonstrated by surrounding oneself with supporters. It is demonstrated by engaging respectfully with critics. Public officials should not fear scrutiny. They should welcome it.
As residents, we have every right to ask questions about district spending, priorities, staffing decisions, capital projects, and the equitable treatment of students across our schools. These are not acts of hostility. They are acts of civic responsibility. The district belongs to the community, not the other way around.
Unfortunately, some interactions with district leadership leave the impression that challenging questions are neither appreciated nor encouraged.
In my own experience, an interaction with Assistant Superintendent Jessica Cincotta was both disappointing and unprofessional. Rather than engaging in a productive discussion, the conversation became dismissive and ultimately ended abruptly. Whether intentional or not, such conduct sends a message that disagreement is unwelcome and that those seeking answers should simply accept the district's position without further inquiry.
But perhaps the most troubling issue facing district leadership today is the question of trust.
Many community members continue to express concern regarding Superintendent Aderhold's decision to publish a book that was widely perceived as portraying a parent from this community in a negative light. Regardless of intent, the lasting effect has been significant. Public school leaders occupy positions of extraordinary influence, and with that influence comes a responsibility to foster confidence among the families they serve.
The concern extends beyond a single book or a single parent. It raises a broader question that many residents quietly ask themselves: If a parent speaks out, challenges district decisions, or becomes a vocal critic, what happens next? Will they be treated fairly? Will their concerns be heard? Could their advocacy affect how they or their children are perceived?
Whether those fears are justified is not the point. The fact that such concerns exist at all represents a failure of leadership. Effective leaders create an environment where parents feel comfortable speaking openly without fear of ridicule, retaliation, or dismissal.
Public trust is fragile. Once lost, it is difficult to rebuild.
The residents of West Windsor and Plainsboro deserve leaders who embrace transparency rather than resist it. They deserve administrators who answer difficult questions instead of avoiding them. They deserve a district culture where accountability is viewed as a responsibility, not a threat.
Most importantly, they deserve leadership that understands a simple principle: asking tough questions is not an attack on public education. It is one of the most important ways citizens protect it.
The measure of leadership is not how it responds to applause. It is how it responds when the community demands answers.
