As we begin to look back on 2019, one residential design trend is clearly at the center of it all – clean lines. While we expect today's monochromatic colors and modular trends to continue in home design, what other themes can we look forward to in 2020?

Joe Raboine, a designer and outdoor living expert with Belgard, sees this new decade as a chance to make the outdoors a retreat and oasis, and what better way to do so than by taking cues from nature? From unique shapes to colors making a comeback, five outdoor design trends will lead the charge in influencing how we bring the indoors outside.

  1. Nature's Influence + Material Combinations integrated into design using turf, stone and contrasting textures (think smooth porcelain intertwined with the rough finish of gravel) that connect the built environment to natural elements.
  2. A Bridge Between Living and Working Spaces as more people are working from home and want comfortable spaces to work, live and relax. A true extension of the home, outdoor spaces create a change in scenery from the well-known home office with retaining walls that double as seating and fire features that make spaces livable year-round.
  3. Unique Shapes and Patterns mimic those seen in interior design that bring a retro feel and playfulness to outdoor spaces. Geometric shapes like hexagons and trapezoids make a statement in features like paver shapes, pillows and textiles, rugs and more. In addition, large format shapes and asymmetrical, almost jagged edges will continue as popular styles.
  4. Warmer Tones + Comeback Colors will make their way back into outdoor design to create sanctuary spaces. While grays made a slash in residential design and edged out tans and beiges in recent years, 2020 will bring a shift back to warmer hues and softer muted colors.
  5. Curb Appeal and the Front Porch appeared as a trend in 2019 but will continue to become a focal point in 2020. As lot sizes continue to get smaller, we’ll see the front of the home as a gathering and living space in addition to existing as a greeting area – making for “Instagrammable” curb appeal.
