1. Salt Lake City close to fully replacing 200 North Temple trees lost in 2024 mishap (deseret.com) — Salt Lake City is halfway through permanently replanting hundreds of trees along the North Temple corridor and nearby streets after a 2024 herbicide mishap, with work expected to finish by late November. Crews are adding more than 270 extra trees and 550 rose bushes, aiming to cool the west side, improve safety and walkability, and boost nearby businesses.
2. Salt Lake City's contentious housing options proposal receives key endorsement (ksl.com) — Salt Lake City's Planning Commission has unanimously endorsed a sweeping "expanding housing options" zoning change that would allow duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes and small townhomes across most residential neighborhoods. The proposal, now headed to the City Council, aims to boost housing supply but has residents split over affordability, parking, infrastructure, and investor impacts.
3. Salt Lake City residents see higher utility bills as aging infrastructure needs grow (kutv.com) — Salt Lake City residents are seeing higher water, sewer, stormwater, and street-lighting charges after Public Utilities raised rates this summer to fund aging infrastructure and meet stricter regulations. City officials say increases have been phased in for a decade, and a community advisory committee helps review needs, while impact fees on new development aim to shield existing residents from added costs.
4. Salt Lake City names first Poet Laureate (abc4.com) — Salt Lake City has appointed longtime poet and educator Joel Long as its first Poet Laureate, launching a three-year term through June 2029. He'll write annual civic poems, host readings in all seven council districts, and create public programs that weave poetry into everyday community life around the city.
5. Salt Lake City International Airport handles 95% of Utah's passenger traffic despite 46 airports statewide (fox13now.com) — Salt Lake City International Airport continues to dominate Utah air travel, handling about 95% of all commercial passenger traffic despite 46 public-use airports statewide. New FAA and state data show how heavily the state relies on the Salt Lake hub compared with smaller commercial airports in Provo, St. George, Ogden, Moab, Vernal and Cedar City.
