📰 News we're reading

1. Salt Lake City police say drones film flights, retain video only when it is evidence (kutv.com) — Salt Lake City police now use seven drone "first responders" stationed across town to reach many 911 calls in under two minutes and capture aerial video for evidence. The department says footage is deleted unless needed for a case, but acknowledges growing privacy concerns as drones and the Real-Time Crime Center become bigger parts of local policing.

2. Great Salt Lake Lidar: Geo Week 2027 Keynote (lidarnews.com) — A major Geo Week 2027 keynote in downtown Salt Lake City will spotlight new lidar mapping of the shrinking Great Salt Lake and what it means for nearby communities. Held at the Salt Palace Convention Center next February, the session will gather scientists and geospatial experts to explain how detailed lakebed data can guide environmental and public policy decisions.

3. Delta, SkyWest add 4 new routes out of Salt Lake City airport (deseret.com) — New nonstop and seasonal routes from Salt Lake City International Airport will soon give residents easier access to Flagstaff, California's wine country and coast, and Moab. Delta and SkyWest are adding year-round and seasonal flights that expand options for both Utahns heading out and visitors coming into the region's outdoor destinations.

4. A Plane Controlled From California Landed In Utah (aero-news.net) — A remotely piloted Joby Aviation aircraft recently landed at Salt Lake City Airport while its pilot controlled it from California, as Utah transportation officials and lawmakers watched. The electric air taxi test is helping shape safety rules and future infrastructure, with hopes it could eventually offer rideshare-priced flights and improve access for rural communities and emergency response.

5. No. 12 Utah, Kansas bring staunch defenses into Big 12 matchup (statenews.net) — A top-15 Utah football team will host Kansas in Salt Lake City on Saturday night, bringing two of the Big 12's strongest defenses head-to-head. With Utah undefeated and riding a 10-game 30-plus-point streak, locals can expect a high-stakes matchup that could shape the Utes' Big 12 title hopes.
