🌱 Armed Robbery In Downtown SLC + Body Found In Jordan River

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Salt Lake City.

Hey, Salt Lake City! Let's get you started this Friday with everything you need to know going on around Salt Lake City today.

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny. High: 38 Low: 19.

Here are the top 4 stories today in Salt Lake City:

  1. Salt Lake City is one of the most overpriced housing markets in the country. As demand continues to rise, homes are selling faster than ever before, for more money than ever before. Lower interest rates have played a factor, but so has COVID-inspired migration, which has seen folks move away from coastal cities as more of them have found location independence while working from home. (24/7 Wall St. - Salt Lake City)
  2. Thursday SLCPD officers responded to a call near 200 East 100 South where a man was assaulted and robbed at gunpoint. The 38-year-old man wielding the loaded handgun has been arrested. Despite being pistol-whipped, the victim did not suffer serious injuries while the perpetrator has been booked in the Salt Lake County Metro Jail. (fox13now.com)
  3. While the state bird for Utah is a California seagull, a proposed bill this legislative season looks to give a native Utah bird a slightly different official designation, the state bird of prey. An apex predator, the majestic golden eagle dominates Utah's skies and is respected by hunters, conservationists, and Native Americans. It is also absent the religious heritage context that the seagull has in Utah, and can be a more inclusive bird for everyone who calls the Beehive State home. (KUER 90.1)
  4. Homicide detectives have responded to a developing scene along the Jordan River in Salt Lake City where a body was discovered Thursday morning near 730 North Riverside Drive, according to SLCPD. It remains unclear how the person died. The deceased has not at this time been identified. (Subscription: Salt Lake Tribune)

Today in Salt Lake City:

  • The World of the Wild Art Show is an exhibit that provides Utah artists an opportunity to display their wildlife and "wildnature" works in a setting complementary to their work, tonight at Salt Lake City's Hogle Zoo. (10:00 AM)
  • Crowdsourced Comedy's legendary show, Stand and Deliver, is back! Featuring local stand-up comedians using their best material to inspire scenes for professional improvisers in a show that gives you the best of both worlds: scripted punchlines and on-the-fly theatrics, tonight at Why Kiki. (7:30 PM)
  • Wasatch Theatre Company presents The Great Plan of Happiness, a play that focuses on Cassie, a young Mormon woman, who visits her family in Highland, Utah after spending years living and working in Chicago. Showing tonight at The Gateway. (8:00 PM)

From my notebook:

  • "Utah's big game application period is now open! It's time to plan for your favorite time of year. Apply for the hunts you want. See the guidebook. And learn more." (Utah Division of Wildlife Resources)
  • "From Olivier Messiaen's "Des Canyons aux étoiles…" to Maynard Dixon's landscapes of Utah's red rock, our state is not lacking in artistic inspiration! Composer @lincolndecusatis did one of the most dangerous hikes in North America—Canyonland's The Maze — and composed a daring concerto for Concertmaster @madelineonthemove to perform this weekend." (Utah Symphony)
  • "If you could only eat at 5 restaurants in Salt Lake City, what would they be? Working on our annual update for our guide to the 15 Best Restaurants in SLC. Coming soon!" (Female Foodie Salt Lake City)
  • "It's #LibraryShelfieDay! You can visit one of our bookshelves in the wild at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art. Through this partnership, a reading area has been put together at UMOCA, with a browsable selection of books curated by our librarians. These books cover our core civil liberties, with titles and additional booklists for all age ranges! Reading is a powerful act of civic engagement; enjoy reading at UMOCA or your local library." (Salt Lake City Public Library)
  • A dry cold front crossed Utah and southwest Wyoming Thursday. This will result in slightly cooler high temperatures and the weakening of valley inversions. Unfortunately, as high pressure rebuilds today into the weekend the inversions will strengthen once again. (US National Weather Service Salt Lake City Utah)
