🌱 Boomtown SLC + 200 S Construction Begins + Edison House Latest

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Salt Lake City.

Good morning, Salt Lake City! Let's get you started this Friday with everything you need to know that's going on around town.

First, today's weather:

Times of clouds and sun. High: 67 Low: 49.

Here are the top three stories today in Salt Lake City:

  1. Construction has officially begun on the project to reimagine 200 S through downtown. More specifically, the stretch of road from 900 E to 400 W will undergo a major overhaul in adjustment to the number of residential buildings being erected along the corridor, including what will eventually be Utah's tallest building. Because 200 S is a backbone transit route, particularly for public transportation, across the whole region, the new design will reflect considerations made for buses and other forms of transportation like bike lanes. 2. Step into the swanky digs, virtually of course, of Salt Lake City's newest Social Club, the 'Edison House' which promises to bring a culture of diversity and curiosity to the membership club trend that has been resurrected in major American cities from its historic centuries-old model. Billed as "not your grandfather's country club," you can get an idea with this virtual tour of what the Edison club will bring to the downtown and nightlife scene of Utah's capital city. (ABC4.com)
  3. The Ascension of Salt Lake City. That's what some community leaders are calling it, but it's undeniable. There is a surge that has hit Utah and its capital, and the explosive growth shows no signs of slowing down. According to recent reports, 70,000 people are working in downtown Salt Lake and a relatively small number of people, about 5,000, live in the heart of the city. Those numbers are expected to grow, and residents downtown are projected to double in the next two years. It's understandable that among the 11 highrises going in downtown, 40 stories will be devoted to residential units. Read more of what all entails Salt Lake City's latest status as a boomtown. From my notebook:

  • Everyone's favorite farm-to-table event is back! Join the Downtown Farmers Market for a gathering of local growers, food purveyors and market supporters as we celebrate the start of the 31st season. We will have food from our farmers, ranchers, and food producers, and a farmers market-inspired beer brewed up by the team at Squatters. Tickets are limited, and you don't want to miss this party! (Downtown SLC)
  • Utah Opera presents The Pirates of Penzance! Vivid, colorful scenery will transport you to the coast of Cornwall in a production that has been described as "playful" (San Diego Union Tribune) and "sunny" (Atlanta Journal Constitution). See it this week at Capitol Theatre! Tix: utahopera.org (The Blocks SLC)
  • Heads up, drivers! The southbound I-215 travel lanes between 3300 South and 4500 South in Millcreek will shift onto new concrete in the median to give the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) I-80 and I-215 renewed project team space to complete the next phase of work in this section while also keeping traffic moving. Traffic will be in a lane split pattern. Drivers will see this new traffic pattern as early as Sunday morning, May 15, and it will be in place through fall 2022. Those needing to exit southbound I-215 at 4500 South should stay in the right two lanes. Through traffic can use all travel lanes. (SLCMoves)
  • What would you do with $1,000 to show how you #LoveYourBlock? The Love Your Block program is awarding mini-grants to residents and community partners to implement projects around Bend in the River and Modesto Park in the Glendale neighborhood. Mini-grant applications are open through June 3. Looking to apply? Apply online at the link below or pick up a paper application at the Glendale Library or Chapman Library. Paper applications can be turned in at the Glendale Library. (Salt Lake City Public Lands)
