Brent Beckley on A Guide to Salt Lake City Activities

Salt Lake City has so many different activities to entertain those of all ages. Brent Beckley shares some places to check out.

Salt Lake City has plenty of activities and different landmarks to explore. Here are a few you should check out when you visit the City of Saints.

Temple Square: Salt Lake City is the heart of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints and throughout temple square you can learn about fascinating buildings and so much more. There are free guided tours offered for visitors between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. daily. Throughout the ten-acre square you can explore the Salt Lake Temple, Tabernacle, and Assembly Hall. All of these buildings give insight into both the history and development of the church. You can also attend performances and practices of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Red Butte Garden - The relaxing gardens and fountains offer an excellent option for those looking for a quieter experience. Red Butte Garden is located on the University of Utah campus and is sectioned off into different areas. Within each area you’ll find a different type of plant or ecosystem. Throughout the entirety of the gardens there’s an abundance to check out so make sure you plan accordingly; you could ideally spend a whole or half day in the gardens.

Great Salt Lake - Known as the largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River, the Great Salt Lake takes up approximately 1,700 square miles. You can hike along the many hiking trails, swim in the lake, and spot various wildlife including bison! Antelope Island is a popular destination and visitors can access the state park year-round. The park spans over 29,022 acres and is home to many different types of wildlife and plants.

Liberty Park - Located right in the city is Liberty Park and it’s an excellent destination for those who don’t want to travel too far outside of Salt Lake City. There’s plenty to do at the park. On the 80 acres you can bike, walk, play tennis, volleyball, and take a look at the aviary and greenhouse. You could easily spend about two hours to half a day here by yourself or with family. It’s open every day from dawn until dusk and admission is free.
