🌱 Central City Rezoned For Micro-Apartments + SLC Bids For RNC

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Salt Lake City.

Good day, people of Salt Lake City! Joseph Peterson here with a fresh Salt Lake City Daily.

First, today's weather:

A snow shower in the A.M. to make for a frosty, winter morning. High: 32 Low: 15.

Here are the top 5 stories in Salt Lake City today:

  1. City Council members unanimously approved a micro-apartment rezoning policy for SLC's Central City neighborhood despite vocal opposition and disruptive protests. The apartments would feature elements of communal living like shared kitchens allocated to all the residents on a given floor. Many fear these new apartments, approved to address the housing shortage in SLC, may end up paving the way for kitchens and bathrooms to be deemed luxury amenities as rent prices continue to rise. 2. Salt Lake City has officially submitted its bid to host the 2024 Republican National Convention, hoping to seal the deal after two previously unsuccessful bids in 2016 and 2012. Proponents for the bid cite the potential economic impact to Utah's capital city as a benefit to hosting the convention. (KUTV 2News)
  3. Specialty food purveyor and champion of local food Matt Caputo has made an appeal to help another icon of the Salt Lake food community, Cathy Tshilombo-Lokemba, who is better known for her incredibly hot and extremely beloved hot sauce business, Mama Africa. In the wake of a stroke and the challenge to meet demand, Caputo launched a fundraiser to help Mama Africa scale her business and get the machinery she needs to fulfill nationwide distribution demands. 4. The Utah Muslim Civic League has long helped refugees resettle here, but is looking to the community to find people willing to be listed as "sponsors" on the paperwork for Afghan refugees in order to more easily bring them and their families from Afghanistan to the Beehive State. (fox13now.com)
  5. Meet Ran Kros, the SLC Police Officer at the airport who, for the last 22 years, has become a legend of cheerfulness and service for travelers and staff at the airport. Officer Kros came to SLC as a refugee escaping the infamous killing fields of Cambodia's genocide, and has made his mark welcoming others, including other refugees, to Utah's capital city and to the United States.
