Friday, March 29, 2019: Second group of ten teams begins competition at 8:00 am.

Location:

Ironworkers Local 27 Training Center

7022 W. Hwy. 201 N. Frontage Rd., SLC

The Competitors:

Twenty-eight teams are comprised of students from 24 Utah high schools, including Maple Mountain (6-time state champions and 2018 3rd place national winner) and 4 post-secondary schools including Salt Lake Community College, Davis Technical College and College of Eastern Utah.

The Event:

Each school’s 3-student team uses welding and fabrication skills to build a designed project from the materials provided by contest officials. The winner is determined by the accuracy of the layout, cutting, fabrication, welding, and overall appearance of the project. The top two winners move on to the national competition.

Sponsorship:

Ironworkers Local 27 sponsors this annual competition to promote the trades and motivate students to achieve greater skill levels through competition. Future apprentices face a strong job outlook in the construction industry as a multitude of construction projects in Utah are projected. An apprentice ironworker can expect to earn up to $43,000 a year, plus benefits, and a higher pay scale at journeyman level.
