π± Crane Collapses On State Street + Avalanche In Big Cottonwood
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Salt Lake City.
Morning, Salt Lake City! Here's everything you need to know to get this Thursday started off right. For those who celebrate St. Patrick's Day, don't forget to wear green!
First, today's weather:
Turning cloudy. High: 52 Low: 36. Sunset: 7:37 PM
Here are the top three stories in Salt Lake City today:
- A rig operator fell 20 feet in downtown Salt Lake City as the crane he was in collapsed and fell onto two cars parked on State Street near 200 S. When first responder crews arrived at the scene, they found the operator in serious condition and transported him to a local trauma facility, according to Salt Lake City Fire Capt. Shaun Mumedy. A construction spokesperson expressed a commitment to learning what caused the collapse. (Salt Lake City Patch)
- Heavy snowfall in a short period of time made for dangerous conditions in Big Cottonwood Canyon that ultimately reached a tipping point when an experienced group of skiiers "dropped in for a slope cut," according to the Utah Avalanche Center, and set off an avalange 600 feet wide. Luckily no one was injured in the barrage that cascaded down the mountain for 1,600 feet. (FOX 13 News Utah)
- "Utah's greatest snow on earth falls approximately 25 times a winter," begins this fascinating breakdown about the cost of winter storms along the Wasatch Front. From road salt to snow removal, labor and road crews to the equipment they use, it's a pricey endeavor to manage snow storms, one that can dramatically increase the longer a storm lasts. Utah's Department of Transportation plans for an estimated $1 million per storm. And while no snow spells bad news for the recreation industry and water supply, dry days can ease the burden of response to snow in the city, opening up opportunities for state agencies to prioritize other maintenance needs.
