🌱 DMV Appointments For SLC Homeless + LDS Church Reopens Sites

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Salt Lake City.

Happy Thursday, Salt Lake City! These are the most important things going on today in town.

First, today's weather:

Mostly cloudy and mild. High: 65 Low: 45.

Here are the top stories today in Salt Lake City:

  1. The Salt Lake City-based group, Nomad Alliance is making mass appointments at the DMV for those experiencing homelessness to get a government-issued I.D. and take a big step forward for independence and stability. After bringing breakfast to Salt Lake homeless encampments, the Alliance provides rides for individuals to the DMV to get their license or I.D. card, which then opens doors for them to get housing, jobs, stimulus checks, and other benefits that require official identification. 2. In another sign of returning to normalcy, the SLC-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has now opened to the public its Historic Sites throughout the state, including Temple Square's Beehive House, downtown, which offers tours through the historic home of one of the church's early leaders, Brigham Young. Closed in March 2020, the Beehive House and other sites in Utah like Cove Fort are once again fully open. (Fox13Now.com)
  3. FOLLOW UP: More alarming details were released last month regarding the Midvale assisted living center highlighted in this newsletter that was shut down due to unsafe and unsanitary living conditions. Investigators discovered a broken furnace and space heaters with cords laying in raw sewage, sagging bathroom floors ready to fall into the basement, and 3-6 inches of raw sewage flooding residents' rooms in the basement. The 22-year-old owner of the facility had an expired business license and had price-gouged residents based on their income. (KSL.com)

From my notebook:

  • "Right now is a great time to get out and see wild swans as they wing their way through Utah! Grab your binoculars and learn where you can spot these beautiful birds." (Utah Division of Wildlife Resources)
  • "The district and our Transportation Department were honored during the recent Utah Clean Cities Beyond Zero Fleet Awards. Our award, the 2021 Electric Fleet School District of the Year, recognized the district's commitment to using electric school buses, especially in neighborhoods with higher levels of pollution." (Salt Lake City School District)
  • Happy March! Later this month, it'll be time to start watering your park strip trees. Our Urban Forestry Division created a helpful calendar this year to serve as a guide for remembering when to water your trees. During Spring from March to May, newly planted trees should be watered 1 to 2 times per week. Water the mulched area with a hose until the ground is saturated and fill the watering bag if it is empty. When it rains or snows enough to completely soak the ground, watering can either be postponed for a day or skipped. (Salt Lake City Public Lands)
  • "Our Design Arts Utah program is now accepting submissions for our Design Arts Utah 2022, a juried exhibition open to professional and post-secondary student designers residing in Utah working in any design practice." (Utah Arts & Museums)
