🌱 Dog Bites Three At Utah Capitol + Jazz In SLC (Not The Team)

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Salt Lake City.

Hey, Salt Lake City! Let's get you started this Friday with everything you need to know going on today in town.

First, today's weather:

Partial sunshine. High: 58 Low: 42. Sunset: 7:38 PM

Here are the top three stories in Salt Lake City today:

  1. A woman's dog bit multiple people while on a walking trail at the Utah State Capitol, according to Utah Highway Patrol. In total, three people were bit by the dog but when a nearby witness told the woman to stop, that someone was hurt, she turned to him and threatened to sick her dog on him. She didn't stop there. The dog owner, now detained by police, also attempted to pepper spray the intervening witness. (KUTV 2News)
  2. University of Utah adjunct professor, David Applegate, has been nominated to head U.S. Geological Survey and is one vote away from being confirmed. As part of the United States Department of the Interior, the U.S. Geological Survey is a key aspect in supporting the agency with the scientific aspect of managing the nation's natural resources. In addition to being a professor, Applegate is currently the associate director for the U.S. Geological Survey's Natural Hazard division and previously has been a science adviser for Earthquake and Geologic Hazards. 3. There's a storied history of Jazz in Salt Lake City (cue basketball team joke) and a larger undercurrent of it than one might initially expect within the live music scene in and around Utah's capital. This is thanks in part to the work of the GAM Foundation bringing national touring jazz musicians to Utah with events like its SLCJazz series and its Excellence in the Community concerts that highlight more local artists. City Weekly's Thomas Crone, somewhat of an SLC newbie, set out to discover more about Salt Lake's jazz scene on his own with this cover story in the weekly alt. (City Weekly)

Today in Salt Lake City:

  • It's the third Friday of the month and that means it's the Salt Lake Gallery Stroll, downtown. (5:00 PM)
  • UtahPresents, along with Youth Theatre at the U, presents "Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical Jr." tonight, at the University of Utah's Kingsbury Hall. (7:00 PM)
  • Westminster College presents "something to return to: SORRY IT GOT WEIRD" where dance, choreography, and performance co-mingle with themes of self, energy, fear, relationships, and flight tonight at Westminster's Dumke Student Black Box Theater. (7:30 PM)

From my notebook:

  • No need for a spacewalk to see Salt Lake's public art! The Blocks SLC has curated a public art and mural trail you can download for free! It's going to be great weather this weekend to explore our piece of the galaxy. (Downtown SLC)
  • There's always a special atmosphere at Access to Music! Every year we provide a special concert designed especially for those with disabilities and sensory-sensitivities as well as their families. This year, we were at the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre, and our audience also got to experience the beautiful set of Utah Opera's production of "Tosca." (Utah Symphony)
  • Need something to do for Spring Break? Sign up for this class at Bad Dog Arts!
RECYCLE - REUSE - REINVENT Explore design through a 'green' lens by taking common materials such as plastic bottles, tin cans, egg cartons, and cardboard and turning them into artistic masterpieces. Each day we will work with a variety of "stuff" to collage, assemble, build, and create with a bit of inspiration from famous and not-so-famous artists. (Salt Lake County Zoo, Arts and Parks)
  • Come see Handstitched Worlds and you'll journey through early traditional European and American quilt-making as well as contemporary sculptural assemblages. The eighteen quilts, which date from the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries, can be seen as maps; their materials, colors, and motifs reveal the personal stories and experiences of their makers.
