🌱Downtown SLC Apartment Fire + Proper Brewery Seeks Next Spots

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Salt Lake City.

Hello, neighbors! Joseph Peterson here with a fresh edition of the Salt Lake City Daily.

First, today's weather:

Sunny to partly cloudy. High: 50 Low: 37.

Here are the top three stories today in Salt Lake City:

  1. A fire scorched part of a downtown SLC apartment complex, although officials announced it was under control not long after it was reported. The historic La France apartments, known for white veneers and portico balconies also have row homes behind the 4-story flats that face 300 South near 300 West. It was one of those row houses that burned, but the apartment was empty and no injuries were reported. The entire complex is slated for demolition to make way for a $300 million development spearheaded by the Greek Orthodox Church, which owns the property. (ABC4.com)
  2. In what could have been a much more tragic occurrence, a couple sleeping in a West Valley dumpster awoke to a terrifying surprise when a garbage truck emptied the dumpster along with its human occupants into the truck's compactor receptacle. The man and the woman were sleeping there to escape the cold, and ended up screaming and banging for their lives to get the attention of the driver who didn't realize they were there. Luckily their screams were heard before the compactor was turned on. The man was taken to the hospital to treat a broken arm. (KSL.com)
  3. Proper Brewing Co. started as a neighborhood micro brewery and bistro in The Avenues, and gradually grew to include a popular burger joint next to a larger brewing facility and tap room near downtown Salt Lake. It grew again with a Utah-only craft beer bar and café in Sugar House. Toss in a rebrand and a few adjustments from bottles to cans alongside new beer releases that flew off the shelves, and the craft brewing enterprise was suddenly primed for even more growth, which is exactly what they're planning. Now in the mix are a possible airport location, a recent Vivint Arena spot, and its first foray beyond Utah's capital city. (Utah Stories)

From my notebook:

  • "Irish" you'd come down to The Gateway Saturday for the longest-running St. Patrick's Day parade in the western United States! Farmers Market will be closed, but come say hi—we will be in the crowd! (Downtown SLC)
  • The play "Noises Off," called "the funniest farce ever written," marks the reopening of Grand Theatre. Performances run Wednesdays through Saturdays, March 23 through April 16, 7:30 p.m., with an additional 2 p.m. showing on Saturdays. (Salt Lake Community College)
  • Need Saturday Plans? We've got you covered! Here at The Gateway, there will be a St. Patrick's Day Parade! In addition to all of the activities on the parade path, we will be doing special St. Patrick's Day art and science programming! Stop in while you're enjoying the festivities (Discovery Gateway Children's Museum)
  • Salt Lake City Government is in need of crossing guards! Help your community in this part-time position that pays $15/hour and includes a Utah Transit Authority (UTA) pass. (SLCMoves)
  • Last fall, Glendale Middle School students met on-site at the old Glendale Water Park Site to share what they wanted to see at the new Glendale Regional Park. Project team members guided them on a site tour, University Neighborhood Partners helped them with a "Place-It" activity and then they got to work envisioning. Check out their amazing work that included poetry and 3-D art! (Salt Lake City Public Lands)
