Happy Wednesday, Salt Lake City! Here's everything you need to know going on in town today.
First, today's weather:
Clouds breaking and warmer. High: 61 Low: 45.
Here are the top five stories in Salt Lake City today:
- Utah Episcopalians have chosen a new bishop in The Rev. Phyllis Spiegel, who will be the second woman to lead the state's oldest Protestant denomination in downtown SLC's St. Mark's Cathedral. Spiegel will relocate to Utah and is looking forward to engaging with leaders from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Utah's dominant religion headquartered in Salt Lake. More than 4,000 Utahns are members of the Episcopalian's Utah diocese. (Subscription: Salt Lake Tribune)
- It's not a great time for water pipes in Salt Lake City. A major, 16-inch cast-iron water main pipe from the 1940s broke, flooding an area near 700 West and 1300 South and damaging two homes. The flood also caused a sinkhole to open, which ended up swallowing a car and causing more damage. No one was hurt, but seven people have been displaced. (KUTV 2News)
- Following the lead of the Starbucks in Cottonwood, workers from a downtown Salt Lake City Starbucks have publicly announced their intention to unionize. Barista Kit Grob who works at the 400 S 400 W Starbucks, and who is in favor of forming a union, noted that other Starbucks in Salt Lake City may see what they're doing and want to do the same.
