π± Glendale Swaps Grocery For Housing + Fed Money For Earthquake
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Salt Lake City.
Happy Tuesday, Salt Lake City! Here's everything you need to know about what's happening in Salt Lake City today.
First, today's weather:
A passing afternoon shower. High: 40 Low: 30.
Here are the top three stories in Salt Lake City today:
- SLC's Glendale neighborhood had a community market that was easily accessible to seniors, students at the Dual Immersion academy and residents living nearby. But the owner of the market has decided to sell, and in a story all too familiar in Utah's capital city, developers are bringing in multi-family housing — in this case, townhomes. Anti-gentrification groups like the Rose Park Brown Berets and other community members are concerned about what the market-rate, master planned housing development will do to the neighborhood, citing concerns like density, traffic, and the disappearance of a walkable grocery. - As welcome as wintery weather is for the drought-concerned and ski-obsessed, those flying in and out of SLC's International Airport faced a less exciting reality due to this week's snowy storm. In total, 123 flights at the Salt Lake airport were delayed, and another canceled outright. But the second snowiest storm along the Wasatch Front this season dropped about a foot of snow along the east benches including 14 inches in upper Millcreek and 11 inches in Bountiful. (KUTV 2News)
- Remember the Magna earthquake that rocked SLC at the beginning of the pandemic? Now Uncle Sam is wanting to foot the repair bill. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved $1.5 million more in Public Assistance funding for Utah to repair road damage caused by the quake. Utah Department of Natural Resources repaired a segment of the Salt Lake Marina Frontage Road that sustained major cracking in the quake, and FEMA, via its Public Assistance program, is reimbursing the state agency for the cost of the repairs.
