π± Major I-80 Weekend Closure + This Is SLC's Third Tallest Building
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Salt Lake City.
Happy Saturday, Salt Lake City! Here's everything you need to know today in town.
First, today's weather:
Cooler; breezy in the morning. High: 57 Low: 34.
Here are the top three stories today in Salt Lake City:
- Major road closure alert: a section of I-80 closed last night at 9:00 PM and is scheduled to remain shut down until early on Sunday, April 10 (estimated 1:00 AM). The Utah Department of Transportation shut down the segment of interstate between 700 East and Foothill Drive to slide a new bridge into place. UDOT suggests drivers use I-15 and I-215 for alternate routes. (KJZZ)
- An intentional attack by a driver speeding into a man on a parked motorcycle in a Millcreek parking lot was caught on a surveilance camera. The victim wasn't seriously hurt, even though the enraged driver jumped out of the car after the collision and physically attacked the victim. The driver told police he saw the man earlier with a gun and was afraid he had a hit on his life so he felt he had to 'kill or be killed.' The victim said he hadn't ever seen his attacker before. (FOX 13 News Utah)
- The location of a former church building known as the social hall in downtown Salt Lake is once again a church building for the SLC-headquartered Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with one distinction: the church's spires aren't the only thing pointing heavenward. The faith's meetinghouse is only one part of the building, but the majority of its 39,000 square-feet of corporate office space is a 395-foot-tall skyscraper, staking its claim as Salt Lake's third tallest tower. - The State Room presents Madam Bandit + Mindy Gledhill in concert tonight at The State Room. (8:00 PM)
- Brewvies Cinema Pub presents the Film Roast of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (9:30 PM)
From my notebook:
- "Congratulations to Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson on her appointment to the Supreme Court! In 2019, she was a Jurist-in-Residence at S.J. Quinney College of Law - University of Utah, and a guest judge of the Traynor Moot Court Competition." (The University of Utah)
- "Please welcome Felicia Day to FanX! Felicia is known for creating the original web series The Guild. She also wrote and starred in the Dragon Age web series Dragon Age: Redemption. On television, Day has played Vi in the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dr. Holly Marten in Eureka, and had a recurring role as Charlie Bradbury on Supernatural." (FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention)
- "It's estimated that millions of birds are electrocuted on power lines each year. Large birds like osprey may also gather twine or discarded fishing line to build nests, but can become entangled in these materials. Here are some awesome photos of several types of structures that work to discourage raptors from perching and nesting on utility poles or dangerous power lines. Thanks to utility workers for their efforts in keeping birds safe!" (Utah Division of Wildlife Resources)
- "Calling local music artists! The City Library is looking for musicians to turn down the volume for the Shh! Concert Series — quiet music created especially for libraries. All styles and genres are welcome. The selected artists will be paid for their work and will perform at the Main Library this summer. Submissions will be accepted April 1–30."
