🌱Medical Cannabis Legislation Progresses + Asian Market To Close

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Salt Lake City.

Hello, people of Salt Lake City! Joseph Peterson here with today's edition of the Salt Lake City Daily.

First, today's weather:

Morning snow, 1-3 inches anticipated. High: 39 Low: 20. Sunset: 6:28 PM

Here are the top three stories today in Salt Lake City:

  1. Medical cannabis in Utah is still finding its footing policy-wise as lawmakers and voters wrestle with how to approach it. This last legislative session proved no different. KUER's recap on 2022 policies and legislation regarding cannabis, CBD, hemp, and more is a useful read, but the main takeaway for patient advocates and legislators who have supported bi-partisan bills this session seems to be agreement that progress has been made, and that more understanding on the plant, including uses and regulatory policies, is greater among legislators as well as the general public than ever before. (KUER 90.1)
  2. When business owners retire, sometimes their stores do, too. After 23 years of being a staple purveyor of Asian market goods and groceries to Salt Lake City, Southeast Market near Liberty Park is closing its doors. March 12-13 will be an "everything must go" clearance sale to clean out the store. The announcement of the closure comes on the heels after the property owner succeeded in a request to the city to change the zoning designation although no plans have been presented on the future of the building that includes other businesses and restaurants. 3. The Great Salt Lake is in trouble. As a dying body of water it presents future risks to the people and animals who live near it including negatively affecting Utah's famed snow quality and worsening its already poor air quality. The lake is also a life-sustaining refuge for millions of migratory birds, but it reached its lowest recorded level in 2021. To help steer away from the life-altering consequences of a vanishing lake, media organizations in Utah are teaming up with nonprofits and educators to establish a historic collaboration that — with funding from the Knight Foundation— will partner, instead of compete, on media-driven initiatives and solutions-based journalism to communicate the vested interest all Utahns have in the future of its famed Great Salt Lake.
