Remember the Reason for the Season

The reason for the season is haéusōs

The modern English term Easter derives from the Old English Ēostre meaning 'to shine' (the first syllable pronounced similar to aura, as in aurora) which was the time of the year after the equinox, when the days become longer. It is precisely this seasonal increase in daylight that unleashes springtime because this seasonal estrous cycle is controlled by light exposure through the pineal gland that releases melatonin. Note the similarity between the word estrous and Ēostre easter; they are one and the same. This is what causes animals to go in to heat and mating season begins. It was not that long ago that your life depended on this season, and the food that it produced, which is why it was so significant and celebrated.

As you might imagine this season was represented by a goddess (not a god) and her name was haéusōs 'goddess of dawn' who was characterized as a "reluctant" bringer of light for which she is punished. Does that sound familiar? Consider that Jesus would not typically be pronounced Geezus because the J is an aspirant character that is supposed to be breathed as in heysus or haéusōs; 'goddess of dawn'.

So the next time you hear someone say “Remember the reason for the season” you will know that haéusōs is the reason for the season. Happy Ēostre!
