🌱SLC Expects Thousands Of Visitors + New Worst Drive-Through

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Salt Lake City.

Happy Saturday, Salt Lake City! Here's everything you need to know going on in town today.

First, today's weather:

It looks like the sun will be a little shy, today, with a partly sunny forecast. High: 67 Low: 40.

Here are the top three stories in Salt Lake City today:

  1. The Salt Lake City-headquartered Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be holding its 192nd Annual General Conference sessions this weekend. The first General Conference to meet in person since the COVID-19 pandemic began. With much of Temple Square still under construction, officials with SLC's Downtown Alliance expect the large crowds — estimated to be in the thousands — will be a big boost for local businesses and restaurants throughout the city, particularly those within walking distance of the church's Conference Center, where the event will take place. (KUTV 2News)
  2. Stalled labor negotiations that led employees to rally at Rio Tinto's headquarters in Daybreak earlier this month has now led to a new agreement between Rio Tinto and its Kennecott Copper Mine employees. The company said it would strive for "fair and competitive wages and enhanced benefits for all represented Rio Tinto Kennecott employees, and new pathways to career progression." With the threat of a strike should an agreement not have been reached by the end of March, Rio Tinto Kennecott managing director Gaby Poirieris very pleased with having a union-ratified Collective Bargaining Agreement. 3. Remember the Chick-fil-A drive through in Sugar House with the long lines that blocked traffic on 2100 S? Well, it looks like readers of the Salt Lake Tribune, told the paper about an overlooked drive through that many say is worse than the Sugar House Chick-fil-A, the Starbucks at Foothill Village. Not only is it a traffic headache, and one that is especially difficult to exit once through the line, as the feedback stated, but area residents are also concerned about the emissions from that many idling cars lined up for coffee in what used to be a Blockbuster Video drive-through with not as much volume. • Back by popular demand, Ballet West presents Carmina Burana with Glass Pieces, tonight at the Capitol Theatre. (7:30 PM)
  • Retired schoolteacher Eleanor Bannister lives a quiet life alone in tiny Groverdell, Texas, in this well-told story of tentative, late-life love. See Fireflies by Matthew Barber, presented by Pioneer Theatre Company, and showing at the Simmons Pioneer Memorial Theatre. (2:00 PM and 7:30 PM)

From my notebook:

  • The Utah Shakespeare Festival has brought "Give 'Em Hell, Harry!" to Salt Lake County. This one-man show (starring TV's Fred Grandy) brings Harry Truman to life. Read the #utahtheatre review! (Utah Theatre Bloggers Association)
  • This April, we are honored to join our friends at @emeraldprojectslc to recognize and support our Muslim community members during Ramadan, the sacred month-long fast of Islam. Freedom of worship has long been a key pillar in our state and we are grateful for the power of art in strengthening our diverse community. (Utah Museum of Contemporary Art)
  • We're happy to announce a new way for you to see the UMFA galleries for free starting today! No foolin'. The UMFA is now a partner with the Bank of America Museums on Us program. The Bank of America "Museums on Us" program offers free general admission during the first full weekend (Saturday and Sunday) of every month to Bank of America, Merrill, and Bank of America Private Bank credit and debit cardholders. (Utah Museum of Fine Arts)
  • Spring is here and with it come butterflies, flowers, warmer weather, and volunteering! If you're looking for opportunities to get outside and give back to your community, consider being a Trail Ambassador with SLC Public Lands! Here for the second year in a row, the Trail Ambassador program gives folks a chance to promote stewardship, connect with new people, and care for our trails. Applications will stay open throughout the summer. Our first Trail Ambassador training will be Monday, April 25 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. (Salt Lake City Public Lands)
