🌱 SLC Mayor Street Fighter? + Olympian Nathan Chen's High Score

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Salt Lake City.

Happy Tuesday, neighbors! Let's get this day started. Here's everything you need to know about what's happening in town today.

First, today's weather:

Plenty of sunshine. High: 45 Low: 26.

Here are the top three stories in Salt Lake City today:

  1. A new nation-wide study led by University of Utah Health to assess risk factors presented by COVID-19 during pregnancy has found that pregnant individuals infected with the virus are "about 40% more likely to develop serious complications or die during pregnancy than those who aren't infected with the virus." The research for this study was led by Dr. Torri Metz, an associate professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and vice chair of Research of Obstetrics and Gynecology at U of U Health. (ABC 4)
  2. "I'd be good in an alley fight" said SLC's mayor assessing the way her office navigated unprecedented challenges for her first term, including an earthquake, a hurricane-force windstorm, massive property damage, violent protests, political battles with the state, and, of course, the COVID-19 pandemic. Mayor Mendenhall also said she's strangely comfortable in what is ultimately an unpredictable enviornment to govern in, as she looks to her goals for the city and redoubles her effort to chip away at an ambitious agenda. 3. Salt Lake City Olympian Nathan Chen took to the ice at Olympic Winter Games in Beijing and delivered the second-highest score ever in the team figure skating event, putting the United States in the lead. With zero deductions, Chen earned a total score of 111.71, ahead of Japan's Shoma Uno and his score of 105.46, making them the only two competitors with scores higher than 100. (KSLSports.com)

I took public transit to work this morning and it was a breeze! It's a great way to help clear the air by reducing vehicle emissions and also to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 2002 Winter Olympics." (Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall)
  • "Interested in becoming a FrontRunner Train Host or a FrontRunner Operator?

  • "Looking for a fun way to celebrate Valentine's Day with your significant 'otter'? Join us Feb 10 from 6:30 - 8:30p and play along with our fun trivia game show! (Utah's Hogle Zoo)
  • "As 2022 begins, the Salt Lake Temple renovation project begins its third year. Over the past two years, two tower cranes were erected on the north and south sides of the temple. These cranes have been used for various purposes, such as removing stones from the walls and towers. These stones will be cleaned and repaired and then replaced in their original locations. The cranes have also been used to lift materials for workers into and around the temple. An additional crane with greater lifting capacity was used to lift the new roof trusses. Current work on the Church Office Building plaza involves waterproofing the repaired concrete surface and installing large Styrofoam blocks under the landscaped areas. The blocks help reduce the load on the existing concrete deck. When completed, near the end of 2022, the plaza will also host flags from various nations around the world and new landscaping." (Temple Square)
  • "A winter journey through Southeastern Utah offers visitors the same epic views of red and orange sandy desert, but in the winter, views are often topped with dramatic touches of sparkling snow." (Visit Utah)
