π± Sugar House's Fried Chicken Traffic + Gentrification In SLC
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Salt Lake City.
Morning, Salt Lake City! Let's get you started this Saturday with everything you need to know going on today in Salt Lake City.
First, today's weather:
A bit of afternoon rain. High: 50 Low: 33.
Here are the top three stories today in Salt Lake City:
- Some westside community residents along with the activist group known as the Rose Park Brown Berets want a moratorium on new housing developments that displace renters until an ongoing gentrification study is complete. City officials, while recognizing the problems with involuntary displacement, say a moratorium would be impossible as it flies in the face of private property rights. In the meantime, folks who have lived in westside rentals for years are facing imminent eviction notices as land and property owners sell to larger multifamily housing developers. (KUER 90.1)
- Tired of how the constant appetite for fried chicken has resulted in a years-long traffic problem, the Sugar House community is now looking for a solution to Chick-fil-A traffic congestion. With the never-ending drive-through line that backs up the flow of vehicle traffic along 2100 S, Landon Clark of the Sugar House Community Council told Fox 13 News that Chick-fil-A's traffic problem was the most discussed issue in the council. The restaurant itself recognizes the problem and its owner is taking an active role in the collaboration to find a solution. (FOX 13 News Utah)
- One Salt Lake man with deep ties to Ukraine has organized two massive fundraisers for this weekend in Salt Lake City. Eli McCann's experience of living in Ukraine as a young missionary sparked an enduring interest in the country and its people which has led him to return more than a dozen times over the years. Now, years of fostering those connections has kept McCann connected to the events happening there in a unique way, which has helped him in rallying his Utah community to raise nearly $20,000 ahead of this weekend's fundraisers. - "Nora Ezell was a virtuosic artist known for her dazzling improvisational quilts. In this work, Ezell transformed a traditional eight-pointed Star of Hope pattern into what she sometimes referred to as a "star puzzle" quilt. Further influencing Ezell's creative output was her experience of the legacies of slavery, reconstruction, and post-reconstruction in the Jim Crow South. The star motif evokes celestial navigation used by enslaved people on the Underground Railway. According to Ezell, the Star of Hope says: "Look to God for all things, take your burden to him and leave it there. He can and will fix it for you." The quilt may also reference Billie Holiday's famous song, "Stars Fell on Alabama," which Ezell cites as a "beautiful memory." See this quilt in Handstitched Worlds: The Cartography of Quilts on view now through May 15." (Utah Museum of Fine Arts)
- An Oscar Nominee for Best Documentary 2022, the absorbingly cinematic Ascension explores the pursuit of the "Chinese Dream." This observational documentary presents a contemporary vision of China that prioritizes productivity and innovation above all. Expand your mind, see this documentary this weekend!
