The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Salt Lake City.
Good morning, Salt Lake City! Let's get you all caught up to start this day off on an informed note. Here's everything you need to know about what's happening in SLC today.
First, today's weather:
Milder with sunshine. High: 59 Low: 40. Sunset expected at 7:43 PM
Here are the top five stories in Salt Lake City today:
- You may have seen the AMBER ALERT go out Tuesday for a 14-year-old Magna girl who was last seen getting into a vehicle with 20-year-old David Lopez and whose disappearance had the police concerned that her life was in danger. But this is a good news story, because due to that AMBER ALERT, Areli Arroyo Osuna was found in Texas. She is now safe, and the driver, Lopez, was taken into custody. In the wake of her disappearance, online messages between the two were discovered, though they had only known each other for a few months. Regarding whether human trafficking could be the issue, police said that much is unknown though it's always a possibility and certainly one they have in mind for this case.
- More than 60% of Salt Lake County residents aren't up-to-date on COVID vaccinations, and while the county is currently experiencing a rate of low COVID transmission, yet another new variant making its way through the population. With vaccination rates like that, the BA2 variant presents a certain risk for another spike in tranmission throughout Utah's most populous county. Public health experts are celebrating the low transmission rate at present, while also encouraging residents to get caught up with a booster vaccine if they haven't already. (KSL.com)
- The hills are alive, with the sound of...mountain goats. That's right, March and April are prime months to see these mystics of the mountains in their natural habitat here in Utah. But it may be tricky if you don't know where to look. To help, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) will be hosting a couple of goat-viewing events you may want to register for in the coming weeks. Regarding where they like to roam, "The Uinta Mountains are the largest contiguous block of mountain goat habitat in Utah" according to Tonya Kieffer-Selby of the DWR. If you do head out on a viewing expedition, be sure to bundle up. (ABC4.com)
