Utah Teens Who Shouted Racial Slurs On Video Given 'Appropriate' Response

But privacy laws prevented the Weber School District from explaining what administrators did, spokesman Lane Findlay said Tuesday.

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — "Appropriate action" was taken against several Utah teen girls who recorded themselves shouting a racial slur and expletive and posted the video on social media, school officials said — but the district didn't elaborate on what that action entailed. Privacy laws prevented the Weber School District from explaining what administrators did after they completed their investigation into the 10-second video, spokesman Lane Findlay said Tuesday. The video was made by high school students, three of whom are cheerleaders. All appeared to be white.

The girls recorded themselves saying a nonsensical phrase, he said. An app repeated the phrase backward, resulting in the vulgar words. The video was made a year ago on fall break and posted recently on Instagram and caught widespread attention from there.

The girls were very apologetic, Findlay said. The district is considering anti-discrimination training for students and staff.
