West High Student Named One Of Nation's Top Science Students In Salt Lake City School District

Society for Science has announced that Daphne Liu, a student at West High School, was among the top 300 scholars in the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2021, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. Liu will receive $2,000, and West High will receive $2,000.

The Regeneron Science Talent Search scholars were selected from 1,760 applications received from 611 high schools across 45 states, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and 10 countries. Scholars were chosen based on their exceptional research skills, commitment to academics, innovative thinking and promise as scientists.

Liu's project was titled, Using Machine Learning to Predict Physiological Metrics from PPG Pulse Shapes. This project was started this past summer by Liu at an elite summer research program held virtually but sponsored by MIT, called RSI. As part of RSI, Liu was involved with a cadre of top global science students who were mentored by science faculty. Liu plans to continue her studies at Harvard University.
