1. Burlington artist, dug Nap, struck and killed e-bike rider in crosswalk, new court filing alleges. (vtdigger.org) — A Burlington folk artist has pleaded not guilty to a negligent operation charge after a July crash at Pine and Locust streets that fatally injured 16-year-old cyclist Shiloh Skalka. The case, unfolding in Chittenden County Superior criminal court in Burlington, is drawing close attention from local families and bike-safety advocates concerned about crosswalk protections and driver awareness.
   

2. Why Yankee Magazine picked Burlington as a top fall foliage destination (burlingtonfreepress.com) — Burlington just earned Yankee Magazine's pick as Vermont's top spot for 2026 fall foliage, thanks to its lakefront views, public art, and easy access to leaf-peeping routes. The piece highlights Lake Champlain vistas, murals along Pine and Church streets, and even a new boutique hotel on Cherry Street, plus a suggested side trip to Smugglers' Notch.
   

3. UVM welcomes incoming freshman class (mychamplainvalley.com) — Thousands of new UVM students are arriving in Burlington, bringing 2,400 freshmen and 350 transfer students from across the country and world. Incoming students say they're drawn not just to the campus but to Burlington's artsy, outdoorsy vibe and nearby skiing, as they settle in before fall classes begin Monday, Aug. 31.
   

4. Buffum Foundation announces two endowments at the Vermont Community Foundation (vermontbiz.com) — A new $1 million Buffum Family Foundation endowment will permanently support Burlington's Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center and Elevate Youth Services in Barre. The Burlington funding will bolster adaptive sailing, diversity initiatives, scholarships, and outreach so more residents of all abilities can get on the water and feel included.
