📰 News we're reading

1. Radio Bean's closure leaves another hole in Burlington's music scene (921wvtk.com) — Radio Bean, a longtime Burlington hub for live music and community events, is closing after its owner says a sudden $30,000 liquor liability insurance bill became unmanageable. The shutdown follows other venue losses like Arts Riot and Nectar's, worrying local musicians and raising pressure on lawmakers to revisit Vermont's bar insurance laws when they return in January.

2. More than 30 apartments added in Burlington supporting veterans, unhoused (mynbc5.com) — New permanently affordable apartments have opened on South Winooski Avenue in Burlington, adding 38 units that prioritize veterans and people transitioning out of homelessness. Backed by federal, state, and private funding, the project already houses 46 residents and is intended as a long-term community asset, supporting people who work in Burlington and across Chittenden County.

3. Seven protesters arrested for trespassing at ICE office in Williston, VSP says (mynbc5.com) — Several Burlington and South Burlington residents were among seven people arrested Friday while protesting outside an ICE surveillance office in Williston, after they allegedly refused to leave private property. Organizers say the group, which included local faith leaders, aimed to shield immigrants from what they view as unfair targeting; all seven were cited and released, with court dates set for October 20.

4. Plans for 100-bed shelter in Chittenden County run into pushback (vtdigger.org) — Plans for a 100-bed low-barrier shelter near Burlington International Airport have been shelved after South Burlington officials opposed using a former mattress store on Williston Road. Nonprofits say the shelter would ease pressure on Burlington, where more than 320 people were recently counted living outdoors, and are now scrambling to find another site before winter.

5. New Burlington clinic offers specialized care for those at risk for suicide (wcax.com) — A new Asha Clinic at UVM Medical Center in Burlington is now offering specialized, suicide-focused outpatient care for Vermonters struggling with suicidal thoughts. Backed by the Four Pines Fund, the clinic uses active, skills-based treatment and trains medical students and residents, aiming to expand suicide-prevention expertise throughout Burlington and the wider state.
