📰 News we're reading

1. Unhoused person arrested after reported break-in at Burlington residence (mychamplainvalley.com) — Burlington police say a 41-year-old man broke into a Hungerford Terrace home, prompting a resident to hide in a closet before officers arrested him in the bathroom. The suspect, who allegedly entered through a window and carried suspected cocaine, has a prior criminal history and is under an Order of Hospitalization while awaiting arraignment in Chittenden Superior Court.

2. Plans for 100-bed shelter in Chittenden County run into pushback (vtdigger.org) — Plans for a 100-bed low-barrier shelter near Burlington International Airport have been shelved after South Burlington officials opposed the Williston Road site, citing distance from Burlington's core services. With more than 320 people counted living outdoors around Burlington in August, nonprofits are now scrambling to find another Chittenden County location before winter, even as state leaders debate how large and where such shelters should be.

3. Seven protesters arrested for trespassing at ICE office in Williston, VSP says (mynbc5.com) — Two residents from Burlington and South Burlington were among seven people arrested after refusing to leave an ICE surveillance office property in Williston. State police say about 20 protesters entered the office park, and organizers describe those arrested as local faith leaders trying to shield immigrants from what they view as unfair targeting.

4. Liquor liability insurance still a challenge for some Vermont bars, despite reforms (wcax.com) — A Burlington bar, Radio Bean, is closing in part because of the high cost of liquor liability insurance, highlighting a challenge many Vermont nightlife spots still face. Despite recent reforms to state dram shop laws, businesses that earn most of their revenue from alcohol continue to struggle with steep premiums and uncertain legal risk.

5. More than 30 apartments added in Burlington supporting veterans, unhoused (mynbc5.com) — New permanently affordable apartments have just opened in Burlington, adding 38 units that prioritize veterans and people emerging from homelessness, with 46 residents already moved in. Backed by federal, state, and private funding, the South Winooski Avenue redevelopment replaces the former VFW and Community Justice Center and aims to keep these homes from ever converting to market-rate, supporting people who work in Burlington and nearby communities.
