📰 News we're reading

1. More job cuts by the University of Vermont Health Network to improve sustainability (921wvtk.com) — Nearly 200 jobs across the University of Vermont Health Network, including in Burlington, will be eliminated by the end of October as leaders try to close a budget gap. About 55 positions will be restructured into new roles, and many affected clinical staff can apply elsewhere in the network, but officials warn these cuts likely won't be the last step toward financial "sustainability."

2. Burlington to install surveillance equipment at City Hall Park (wcax.com) — Burlington police are rolling out a mobile surveillance trailer with cameras, lights, and loudspeakers in City Hall Park as soon as Friday to address open drug use and dealing. The system, run with Utah-based Lightview Technologies but controlled by the city, has sparked mixed reactions from workers and visitors who balance safety concerns with worries about constant monitoring.

3. USAO: Vergennes teen suspected of multiple burglaries (mychamplainvalley.com) — An 18-year-old from Vergennes is accused of robbing a Stewart's Shops on Shelburne Road in South Burlington and is suspected in several other recent burglaries in Burlington, South Burlington, and Winooski. He allegedly threatened clerks with what looked like a handgun before fleeing with cash and is now being held pending another court hearing, after what federal prosecutors call a coordinated, swift investigation.

4. Lily Seabird is On Her Way (premierguitar.com) — A Burlington-based musician, Lily Seabird, has released a new album shaped by years of living, creating, and riding out long winters in the city. The record grew from home recording sessions, pandemic isolation, and time on the road, but she credits Burlington's close-knit, low-industry music scene with giving her space to experiment, collaborate with friends, and turn personal upheaval into intimate psychedelic folk songs.

5. Vermont man on trial claims CIA told him to shoot three Palestinian students (ktvu.com) — The trial is underway for Jason Eaton, accused of shooting three Palestinian college students while they walked near his Burlington home in 2023. Prosecutors say he bought the handgun months earlier, while his defense centers on an insanity claim involving alleged CIA and Mossad messages, as the now-23-year-old victims testify about the attack and its lasting injuries in a Vermont courtroom.
