Although I have loved getting to know this community, we want to pass the torch to someone truly local to write about Burlington long term. So if you're interested in earning extra income while making this newsletter a more valuable resource for your neighbors, learn more and apply here.
First, today's weather:
A little wintry mix. High: 44 Low: 28.
Here are the top three stories today in Burlington:
- The annual Burlington Irish Heritage Festival is officially in full swing after its kick-off on Sunday. The festival is intended to display the cultural depth of Ireland on St. Patrick's Day. Festival attendees will be able to participate in a genealogy workshop, explore Irish dance, hear Irish poetry and learn some of the Irish languages. The festival will end on Mar. 30, 2022. (WCAX)
- Vermont lawmakers in Burlington have announced steps to support Ukraine during the unprovoked Russian invasion. Vermont's Governor Phil Scott asked the legislature to fund $643,077 in humanitarian aid for the European country, roughly one dollar for every Vermont resident. The money has not been designated for any specific organization but the Governor hopes it will go to a single organization. (WPTZ)
- Supporters of the sister city program are dismayed at the suspension of Burlington's relationship with Yaroslavl, Russia. Burlington and other Vermont communities severed ties with their Russian sister cities in response to the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine. Supporters of the sister city program argue that the relationship is about engaging with friends and allies in other countries while forming a channel for dialogue. (WCAX)
