Here are the top three stories today in Burlington:
- Students from all over Vermont entered Senator Bernie Sanders' 12th annual State of the Union essay contest, with the winners meeting with Sanders over the weekend. The senator met in Burlington with three winners on Friday, later engaging in a roundtable with all ten winners at the Statehouse on Saturday. "There are huge huge challenges facing this country and I want the young people to be thinking about it and be studying them," said Sanders. "It’s not only appropriate but it’s the right thing, the American thing, to be able to express your point of view." (WCAX)
- Burlington and its businesses are both stepping up to provide aid to Ukrainians in need. On Friday, Mayor Miro Weinberger said that despite the city's ongoing housing crisis, "Burlington stands ready to do everything it can to help." Local businesses, including Stella Mae and Vermont Flannel Company, are raising funds and collecting supplies for those in the war-torn country. (WPTZ)
- On Saturday afternoon, a head-on car crash temporarily shut down the Burlington Beltline and sent two people to the hospital. The driver of the first vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while the driver and passenger of the second vehicle were "seriously hurt" and transported to UVM Medical Center. Though the investigation is ongoing, police have determined speed and alcohol contributed to the crash. (WCAX)
