• Baresel, Dobyns-Bennett shine at Bristol Cross (johnsoncitypress.com) — Abingdon High's boys and girls cross country teams turned in strong performances at the Bristol Cross meet at Steele Creek Park, with the girls winning the team title and the boys finishing second. Local standouts Lily Morrow, Clara Bakker, and Parley Staton led the way as nearly 300 varsity runners from Tennessee, Virginia, and Kentucky tackled one of the region's toughest courses.
• Haysi Town Council asked for the state police investigation that led to fraud charges against the longtime mayor (cardinalnews.org) — A longtime Haysi mayor faces multiple fraud and embezzlement charges after his own town council asked Virginia State Police to investigate months of disputed spending, and he is currently held at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail's Abingdon facility. Council members say they've tightened financial controls, are unanimously urging his resignation, and may seek his removal in court while working to restore public trust in nearby small towns.
