Soup Recalled In VA Due To Potentially Fatal Allergen

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently announced the recall of a product sold across Virginia because it may contain a potentially fatal allergen.

Kettle Cuisine is recalling 24-ounce containers of Whole Foods Market Kitchen minestrone, which may contain undeclared shrimp.

Undeclared shrimp refers to a hidden or unlisted shrimp ingredient in a packaged food product. People who have allergies to crustacean shellfish run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume the product.

Food manufacturers are legally required to state on the label whether a product contains any major food allergens, which include crustacean shellfish like shrimp. Because shrimp is a common and highly potent allergen, its omission from an ingredient list triggers immediate mandatory recalls.

In addition to stores in Virginia, the soup was also distributed in Alabama, Connecticut, Washington, D.C., Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maine, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee and Maryland through Whole Foods and the Amazon website.

The recalled product is packaged in a 24-ounce, clear plastic container marked with a Lot Code: 1762181 and a use-by date of 05/27/26 on the top rim of the cup. A UPC identifier of 099482502065 is located on the back label.

No other soups or use-by codes are affected in the recall.

Consumers who have purchased the affected product are advised to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
