WYTHEVILLE, VA — A nearly century-old hot dog stand in Southwest Virginia has earned national recognition for serving the state's most iconic hot dog.
Skeeter's Hot Dogs in Wytheville was selected as Virginia's entry in Only In Your State's ranking of 50 Iconic Hot Dogs in the U.S. Worth the Road Trip.
Only In Your State said its nationwide list focused on establishments that have come to define hot dogs in their respective states, including some that opened before World War II and others that operate seasonally or from mobile food trucks.
The ranking chose one hot dog destination in each state, with the final list highlighting a wide range of eateries, including stands, drive-ins and lunch counters.
Located on Main Street in downtown Wytheville, Skeeter's has been serving customers since 1925, making it one of Virginia's oldest continuously operating restaurants. The eatery is known for its hot dogs topped with a housemade chili sauce, the recipe for which has remained a closely guarded secret for generations.
Skeeter's occupies a historic brick storefront with black-and-white tile floors and classic counter seating, preserving much of the atmosphere that has welcomed customers for decades. The building also has ties to American history — former first lady Edith Bolling Wilson, wife of President Woodrow Wilson, was born there.
Skeeter's has earned other praise over the years. Television personality Rachael Ray previously also included it among her top 64 hot dog restaurants in the United States.
