From $135,000 to $2.2 million: Homes sold in Alexandria last week (alexandriabrief.com) — Homebuyers and sellers in Alexandria saw 26 closings last week, with prices ranging from a $135,000 studio to a $2.2 million Old Town townhouse. The average sale price dipped to about $684,000 and the median to $472,500, with most homes selling below original list after roughly 100 days on the market.
2. JUST IN: Alexandria man indicted on murder charges for Holmes Run Parkway shooting (alxnow.com) — An Alexandria man has been indicted on murder and firearm charges in the July 15 shooting death of Charles Talley at ParcView Apartments on Holmes Run Parkway. Police say Talley died after being found with a chest wound, and the suspect remains jailed in North Carolina awaiting extradition, in what is Alexandria's third confirmed homicide this year.
3. How Alexandria hopes to transform Duke Street into a more unified corridor (wtop.com) — Alexandria planners are advancing a 20-year vision to turn Duke Street into a safer, more unified corridor with new affordable housing, wider sidewalks, trees, and better bike and pedestrian connections. The evolving plan, covering the stretch between Landmark/West End and Alexandria Union Station, aims to preserve small businesses while giving residents more options for getting around.
4. Alexandria's business community gathers as AEDP tallies first results of ALX Forward (alexandriabrief.com) — Alexandria's business and civic leaders just gathered on Duke Street to hear early results from ALX Forward, the city's new economic development strategy. The Alexandria Economic Development Partnership highlighted local success stories and announced a $200,000 state innovation grant to expand tech and startup programming, including its new Accelerate ALX initiative.
5. Federal job cuts, furloughs hit Alexandria harder than regional average, report shows (alxnow.com) — Alexandria households are being hit harder than the regional average by federal job cuts and furloughs, with 62% reporting negative impacts on their finances. A new Gallup and Greater Washington Community Foundation survey also finds some Alexandria-area residents turning to social services for the first time, feeling immigration and law-enforcement pressures, and even considering leaving the region as costs rise and job security weakens.
