Hazardous Material Cleanup Underway At Arlington Park

Residents were urged Tuesday afternoon to avoid a creek at a neighborhood park until further notice following a hydraulic fluid leak.

ARLINGTON, VA — Arlington residents were advised to keep out of the creek that runs through Alcova Park due to a hazardous material spill on Tuesday afternoon, according to authorities.

Shortly before 1 p.m., members of Arlington County Fire and EMS' Hazmat Team were dispatched to the park in response to the report of a hydraulic fluid leak near South George Mason Drive and Eighth Street South, according to a post on the department's official X account.

A short time later, the leak had been contained and cleanup operations were underway, according to the post. Residents may see a visible sheen in in the creek as it flows toward South Four Mile Run.

"Residents are advised to avoid contact with the water and to keep both people and pets out of the creek until further notice," according to Arlington fire and EMS
